APUNTES: Tener+que+infinitive- To have to do something
15 septiembre 2008 Tener+que+infinitive is the formula used to what one “has to do” “Tener” is a verb. It means “to have” *5 conjugations of the verb “tener”* Yo- tengo (I have) Nosotros- tenemos (we have) Tú- tienes (you fam. have) *Ellos- tienen (they have) *Él- tiene (he has) *Ellas- tienen (they have) *Ella- tiene (she has) *Uds.- tienen (you all have) *Ud.- tiene (you f.s. have) *Todo el mundo- tiene (Everyone has) ______________________________________________________________________ “que” will remain the same in each sentence Infinitive- an unconjugated (unchanged) verb. All infinitives in Spanish will end in either –ar, -er, or –ir. *3rd person singular (él, ella, Ud. todo el mundo) will ALWAYS have the same conjugations, so will 3rd person plural (ellos, ellas, Uds.)

I have to sweep- Yo tengo que barrer. Maria and Jane have to sing- Ellas tienen que cantar. Cedric and Shunkita have to cook- Ellos tienen que cocinar. (*Anytime there is a male/female combination, or, if the subject is all masculine, use ELLOS*). Why? The MASCULINE gender always dominates! 4. Ms. L. Ford has to walk (a)- Ella tiene que andar. 5. Grandmother and I have to sew- Nosotros tenemos que coser.
