2 Session Description Debating skills translate to language proficiency skills and gaining confidence in speaking is one of the primary goals and outcomes of both debate and language instruction. Furthermore, debate skills can help students become more comfortable when speaking a world language. This session will focus on how to structure debate in intermediate to advanced classes to help students gain more tools to perform better in their new language. Examples and rubrics will be provided.

Writing is a primary component of solid debating. develop written outlines Public speaking Comfort with a focus on ideas and debate (not mistakes) Critical thinking Research suggests that the implementation of debate in teaching speaking is successful because debate is an interesting activity where students have a lot of opportunity to practice speaking and have active involvement during the debate process in order to defend their opinions.

5 Public Forum Public Forum Debate is a team event that advocates or rejects a position posed by the resolution. A central tenet of the debate is that the clash of ideas must be communicated in a manner persuasive to judge. The debate should: -display solid logic, reasoning, and analysis -utilize evidence but not be driven by it -counter the arguments of the opponents (rebuttal) -communicate ideas with clarity, organization, eloquence, and professional decorum

10 Lincoln-Douglas Lincoln-Douglas debate is one person debating against another person and is primarily focused on competing values. "Resolved: A just social order ought to place the principle of equality above that of liberty." For this resolution, the goal of the debate should be to determine which value is of greater importance in a just social order. Through an examination of the resolutions, underlying values will emerge. Debaters then support their cases.
