Subject Pronouns in Spanish
Yo- means “I” tú- means “you” (fam.) or (inf.) Use this “you” with anyone you can call by his/her first name. él- means “he” ella- means “she” Ud.- (ooh-stead) -means “you” (formal singular) Use this “you” with an adult Nosotros- means “we” ellos- means “they” (masc.) ellas- means “they” (fem.) Uds.- (ooh-stead-dace)- means “you all”
37
The 3 different “You’s” in Spanish
In Spanish, unlike in English, we have 3 different words for the pronoun “You”. We have: a. Tú b. Ud. c. Uds. (eq. to “you all”) How do I know which one to use? It depends to whom you are talking. older person/ someone you’d call ma’am/sir= Ud. friend/anyone you can call by his first name= tú a group of people/ more than one person= Uds. It’s all about RESPECT! It is VERY disrespectful to address an elderly person in the “Tú” form!
