1 Direct object pronouns
Español III

2 The book receives the action of the verb and is the direct object.
A DIRECT OBJECT TELLS WHO OR WHAT RECEIVES THE ACTION OF THE VERB. I read the book. The book receives the action of the verb and is the direct object.

3 We can also replace the direct object with “it” or “them.”
We can find the direct object by asking WHO or WHAT after the verb. He reads the book. He reads what? The book. We can also replace the direct object with “it” or “them.” He reads it.

4 it - lo them - los it - la them - las
There are four direct object pronouns in Spanish: SINGLUAR PLURAL M it - lo them - los F it - la them - las

5 A direct object follows the verb.
She washes the dog: Lava el perro. In Spanish, a direct object pronoun goes in front of the verb. Lo lava.

6 Direct Object pronouns agree in gender and number with the noun they replace.
Leo el libro. We replace el libro with “lo” and place it in front of the verb. Lo leo. Leo los libros. Los leo.

7 Miramos la película. La miramos.
A few more examples: We buy the shoes We buy them. Compramos los zapatos. Los compramos. Miramos la película. La miramos.

8 Now it’s your turn. El chico come la cena.: _______________ La come. Marta escribe la carta._______________ La escribe.

9 Direct object pronouns can also be used in questions.
¿Tienes el lápiz? ¿Lo tienes? Sí, tengo el lápiz. Sí, lo tengo.

10 We can also use these pronouns to refer to people: Me, te, nos
Do you know me? ¿Me conoces? I know you Te conozco. I see you Te veo. I see him Lo veo. He needs me. Me necesita. They know us Nos conocen.

11 The easiest way to figure these out is to:
Isolate the subject and the verb by underlining them. The VERB doesn’t change when you add a direct object pronoun 2. CIRCLE the direct object – and all of it’s modifiers. EX: I have four new books. Tengo cuatro libros nuevos. The word TENGO remains the same. Replace the entire direct object with “los.” Los tengo.

12 Try these: 1. She has a pencil. Ella tiene un lápiz.
She has it. ___________________________ 2. We ride a bicycle. Montamos en bicicleta. We ride it.___________________________ 3. I have four pencils. Tengo cuatro lápices. I have them.__________________________ 4. They need the books. Necesitan los libros. They need them.____________________ Lo tiene La montamos Los tengo. Los necesitan.

13 Notice that when we replace a noun with a direct object pronoun, any modifying adjectives disappear, just like in English: I buy a new pen Compro un bolí nuevo. I buy it Lo compro. She reads many good books . Lee muchos libros buenos. She reads them. Los lee.

14 When there is a working verb and an infinitive, the direct object pronoun can either be placed in front of both verbs OR attached to the end of the infinitive. Quiero leer el libro. Lo quiero leer. Quiero leerlo. Necesito comprar un coche nuevo. Lo necesito comprar. Necesito comprarlo.

15 Try these double verb sentences.
I want to read the book______________________ ___________________________________________ 2. She needs to eat an apple.___________________ __________________________________________ 3. You have to do your homework._______________ 4. They are going to buy a blouse.______________ 5. We need to do our homework.________________ Lo quiero leer. Quiero leerlo. Necesita comerla. La necesita comer. Tienes que hacerla. La tienes que hacer. Van a comprarla. La van a comprar. Necesitamos hacerla. La necesitamos hacer.

16 You need to learn the direct object pronouns! ¡Necesitan aprenderlos!
lo la los las ¡Buena suerte!
