Ser vs. Estar

Ser vs. Estar “Ser” and “estar” both mean “to be.” They are used in different situations and have different meanings. I am..you are…he/she is… They are both irregular verbs so must be memorized! Let´s talk about the uses of SER first.

Conjugaciones de ser (irregular)
Yo soy nosotros/as somos Tú eres vosotros/as sois Él ellos Ella es ellas son Ud. Uds.

SER Use SER to describe permanent CHARACTERISTICS of objects and people. Shaq es muy alto. Use SER to indicate origin, nationality, or profession. Mi tía es doctora. Es de México.

SER Use SER to indicate when and where something takes place.
El concierto es el viernes. Es en el teatro. Use SER to indicate possession. La guitarra es de Elisa.

Yo estoy nosotros/as estamos Tú estás vosotros/as estáis Él ellos Ella está ellas están Ud. Uds.

ESTAR Use ESTAR to describe temporary characteristics, emotional states, or conditions. El teatro está cerrado a esta hora. Los estudiantes están muy nerviosos.

ESTAR Use ESTAR to indicate location. Beauregard está en Alabama.
Use ESTAR to form the progressive tense. Estamos escribiendo notas.

Ser vs. Estar Some adjectives have different meanings depending on whether they are used with ser or with estar. La bailarina es bonita. (The dancer is pretty) La bailarina está muy bonita hoy. (The dancer looks pretty today.) Soy lista. (I am smart.) Estoy lista. (I am ready.)

Ser vs. Estar El cómico es aburrido. (He is boring.)
El cómico está aburrido. (He is bored.) Floyd Mayweather es rico. (He is wealthy.) El postre está rico. (It is rich-tasting.)
