3 Remember that the verb “to be” has 2 meanings in Spanish, Ser and Estar:
Ser; which is used to express what or who you are in terms of: Names Nationalities Religions Relationships Professions Descriptions

4 Names: Yo soy Jorge. Nationalities: Tú eres ecuatoriano. Religions: Ella es presbiteriana. Relationships: Nosotras somos hermanas. Professions: Ellos son médicos. Descriptions: Ustedes son altos y valientes.

5 Estar; Which is used to express where you are or your mood in terms of: - Locations (Physical or Hypothetical) - Temporary states (Mood or some sicknesses)

Usted está en el parque. Él está en nuestro corazón. Temporary states (Mood or Sickness) Nosotras estamos muy felices. Ellos están resfriados.

7 Remember… We will work with three different forms of sentences with all the verbs we will review and learn this semester: Afirmativa: Sujeto + verbo ser/estar + complemento Yo soy tu mejor amigo. Ella está en la escuela. Nosotros somos veterinarios. Ustedes están tristes.

8 Negativa: Sujeto + no + verbo ser/estar + complemento Yo no soy tu mejor amigo. Ella no está en la escuela. Nosotros no somos veterinarios. Ustedes no están tristes.

9 Interrogativa: ¿ + Verbo ser/estar + sujeto + complemento +
Interrogativa: ¿ + Verbo ser/estar + sujeto + complemento + ? ¿Soy yo tu mejor amigo? ¿Está ella en la escuela? ¿Somos nosotros veterinarios? ¿Están ustedes tristes?

Also… There is a fourth form for the sentences which is a combination that may take place sometimes. Negativa-Interrogativa: ¿ No + verbo ser/estar + sujeto + complemento + ? ¿No soy yo tu mejor amigo? ¿No está ella en la escuela? ¿No somos nosotros veterinarios? ¿No están ustedes tristes?
