3 Uses of Estar Estar is one of two verbs which mean to be. Ser is the other. Estar is used in the following situations. To express temporary conditions: emotional/physical states and opinions. Juan esta enfermo hoy. Juan is sick today. ¿Tú estás loco? Are you crazy? Las chicas están muy bonitas hoy. The girls are very pretty today.

4 The Second Use of Estar 2. To express location.
¿Dónde estás ahora? Where are you now. Estoy en la clase de español. I’m in Spanish class. Plattsburgh está en Nueva York. Plattsburgh is in New York.
