Spend about 5 minutes practising them with gestures both receptively and actively i.e. you do the gesture and the whole class says the verb to check their comprehension. You can point also to the pictures to elicit the infinitives. (with sacar, montar and tomar it is worth making a point about literal and non-literal translations and the fact that you don’t say things in exactly the same way – one reason for learning language in context) Then make it clear you are going to focus ‘en el pasado’ and present the language in the ‘yo’ form with rest of the sentence e.g. nade en el mar, tome el sol. Get the class to identify by letter which phrases you are doing. Yo monté Yo bailé Yo descansé

En las vacaciones… Nadé en el mar I swam in the sea. Tomé sol. I sunbathed. Monté en bicicleta. I cycled. Escuché música. I listened… Jugué al voleibol en la playa. I played… Saqué muchas fotos. I took… Elicit the pattern from the class for the ‘yo’ form. Make sure you keep it clear in their minds that this is for saying ‘I’ in the part and present. You will need to explain the reason for change of spelling for ‘jugar’ and ‘sacar’ but make it clear this is just a spelling change – the sounds are all regular!!!!! Get them to write the table down and then check that they are still all happy with the verb meanings. This might be a good time for practice with the mini whiteboards. Bailé con los amigos.
