Review: Present progressive The present progressive is used when a person wants to say that an action is happening “right now.”

Use present tense of estar + present participle. No puedo ir al cine. Estoy estudiando para el examen. I can’t go to the movies. I am studying for the test. Review: Present progressive

Imperfect Progressive Imperfect progressive - describes something that was taking place over a period of time in the past Use imperfect tense of estar + present participle.

Part 1: Imperfect forms of estar estaba (I was)estábamos (we were) estabas (you were)estabais (you all were) estaba (he/she/you formal were) estaban (they were, you all were –not in Spain)

Part 2 participle -ar verbs -er/-ir verbs -Remove –ar- Remove –er/-ir -Add –ando- Add -iendo -Ex: hablar > hablando-Ex: comer > comiendo

Imperfect Progressive Examples: 1.Yo estaba estudiando. (I was studying) 2. Estábamos viendo los fuegos artificiales. (We were watching the fireworks.)

Imperfect Progressive and Preterite Sometimes the imperfect progressive and the preterite are used together. Common pattern: Imperfect progressive + cuando + preterite Imperfect progressive > describes what was happening Preterite > Interrupts the action that was happening or tells a specific action that took place
