 Every verb has two parts: The stem and the ending. We change the ending to say who’s doing the action.  Querer – to want Quer = stem -er= ending  Stem changing verbs are verbs that have a spelling change in the STEM of a conjugated verb everywhere but NOSOTROS and VOSOTROSl

 There are 4 types of stem-changing verbs: E  IE O  UE E  Io_ue U  UE

Querer: e--> ie Yo quiero Taco Bell. Tener: e--> ie ¿Tienes hermanos? Venir: e--> ie ¿A qué hora vienes al colegio?

There are two forms that DON’T stem change because they are outside of the “boot” Empiezo Empiezas EmpiezaEmpiezan Empezáis Empezamos Vosotros Nosotros Empezar- to begin

Good news... Bad news...ad news...

 Good News: use REGULAR VERB endings.  Bad News: There is no way to tell if a verb is a stem-changer. You have to memorize which verbs change and what changes occur for each.  Good news: There are very few verbs that are stem-changing

-AR verbs Cerrar = to close Empezar = to start Pensar = to think -ER verbs Perder = to loose Querer = to want Tener *= to have Entender = to understand -IR verbs Preferir = to prefer Venir* = to come Some verbs have irregularities: Venir = yo vengo Tener = yo tengo

Los domingos dormimos hasta las once.

All E  I verbs end with –IR! Pedir = to ask for Servir = to serve Decir* = to say/tell Repetir = to repeat * Some verbs have irregularities: Decir = yo digo
