When do use SABER  To know information or facts  Ella sabe la hora que empieza la reunión. (I know what time the meeting starts.)  Nosotros sabemos dónde está la fiesta. (We know where the party is.)  To know how to do something  Conjugated form of saber always followed by infinitive:  Yo sé jugar al fύtbol. (I know how to play soccer.)  Mi amigo sabe hablar ruso. (My friend knows how to speak Russian.)  DE: Use the preposition “de” after saber to say how much someone knows about something.  Mi papá sabe mucho de la cultura maya. (My dad knows a lot about Mayan culture.)  Yo sé mucho del béisbol. (I know a lot about baseball.)

When to use CONOCER  To know a person.  Yo conozco a Esteban. (I know Esteban.)  Carla conoce a Rogelio. (Carla knows Rogelio.) To be acquainted/familiar with a place or thing or abstract idea.  Ellos conocen Chicago muy bien. (They know Chicago really well.)  Tú conoces la mύsica de Maná. (You know/am familiar with Mana’s music.)  Yo conozco las obras de Salvador Dalí. (I know/am familiar with Salvador Dali’s paintings.)

You must remember:  A clue as to when to use “conocer”:  you will most likely see the “personal a” used after the verb. What’s the “personal a”? What’s the “personal a”? When the direct object is a person, group of people, or a pet then the “personal a” is needed. When the direct object is a person, group of people, or a pet then the “personal a” is needed. SABER is used to express you know information or know how to do something or know the name of a person or place – again, information. CONOCER is used to express you are familiar with a place or abstract idea. You can also use it “to meet” someone for the first time. “Familiar with” is key to understanding conocer.
