Expressing Obligation with “Hay que” and “Tener que”

When do you use “hay que” & “tener que”?  To talk about things someone must do.  Examples: 1. I have to eat breakfast. Yo tengo que desayunar. Yo tengo que desayunar. 2. One must shower every day. Hay que duharse todos los días. Hay que duharse todos los días.

The 2 Ways to Express Obligation  Use hay que + infinitive if there is no specific subject.  Use tener que + infinitive if there is a specific subject.

HAY QUE  If there is no specific person or subject use: Hay que + infinitive  It is similar to saying: One must……  3. One must go to bed early.  5. One must get dressed in the morning. Hay que acostarse temprano. Hay que vestirse en la mañana.

TENER QUE  If there is a specific subject use: Tener que + infinitive  Because there is a specific subject you must conjugate the verb tener.  4. Ana has to brush her teeth.  6. They (m) have to take off their shoes.  7. You have to shave. Ana tiene que cepillarse los dientes. Ellos tienen que quitarse los zapatos. Tú tienes que afeitarte.
