Gustar, ¿Por qué?, and Porque Capítulo 2

Use the definite articles when talking about nouns as a category or using gustar. Gustar means “to be pleasing to,” but in English we just say that it means “to like”. Me gusta la pizza. Pizza is pleasing to me. (I like pizza.)

If 1 item is liked, use the verb gusta. Me gusta la fruta. If more than 1 thing is liked, use gustan. Me gustan las frutas. If an action (a verb) is liked, used the singular form gusta. Me gusta comer la fruta.

Use the following pronouns to say who likes something: SINGULARPLURAL (I) A mí me gusta(n)(we) A nosotros/-as nos gusta(n) (you) A ti te gusta(n)(y’all) A vosotros/-as os gusta(n) (you-form.) A Ud. le gusta(n) (he) A él le gusta(n) (she) A ella le gusta(n) (you) A Uds. les gusta(n) (they) A ellos les gusta(n) (they) A ellas les gusta(n)

Because le can stand for Ud., él, ella, it, les Uds., ellos, and ellas, use a + name(s) to clarify who is being talked about. Le gustan los carros. Le gustan los carros. -A Becky le gustan los carros. -A Pablo le gustan los carros. -A Ud. le gustan los carros. -A Uds. les gustan los carros. -A los muchachos les gustan los carros. -A Sara y Verónica les gustan los carros. To ask who is being talked about ask “¿A quién?” or “¿A quiénes?”

Use ¿qué? to ask what someone likes: - ¿Qué te gusta? - A mí me gustan los carros.

Put no before the pronoun to say don’t or doesn’t. -No me gustan los libros de amor para nada. To ask why say “¿Por qué? and answer with “porque” (because). - ¿Por qué no te gustan los libros de amor?” - No me gustan porque son pésimos.
