El presente progresivo Por la Sra. Black

What is the present progressive? This tense is used to say that something is happening now. In English, it is formed with a form of the to be verb and a present participle (ends in – ing) –I am dancing. –We are laughing.

How it’s formed in Spanish. The present progressive is formed by using the present tense of the verb “estar” + present participle (p.p.). Estoy Estás Está Estamos Estáis Están

Present Participle Formation To make a present participle, drop the infinitive ending (ar, er, ir) If it’s an “ar” verb, add “ando” to the end. If it’s an “er” or “ir” verb, add “iendo” to the end. –Comprar – comprando –Escribir – escribiendo –Comer – comiendo

Irregular Present Participles When the stem of an “er” or “ir” verb ends in a vowel, add “yendo” The stem of the verb is what you’re left with after removing the infinitive ending. Example –Leer – le – leyendo –Construir – constru – construyendo

Stem-Changing “ir” present participles “ir” verbs that stem change e-ie or e-i in the present tense will have the stem-change e- ibin the present participle –Decir – diciendo (to say/tell) –Preferir – prefiriendo –Pedir – pidiendo (to order)

Stem-Changing “ir” present participles “ir” verbs that have the stem change o-ue will have the stem change o-u in the present participle. –Dormir – durmiendo –Morir – muriendo (to die)

Vamos a practicar I am eating. You are singing. He is reading. We are sleeping. They are ordering.

Vamos a verificar Yo estoy comiendo. Tú estás cantando. Él está leyendo. Nosotros estamos durmiendo. Ellos están pidiendo.

Reflexive Verbs with Present Progressive When there is a pronoun + the present progressive tense, there are two possible placements for the pronoun. –Before the conjugated form of estar Yo me estoy arreglando. –After and attached to the p.p. with an added accent on the stressed syllable (either the “a” or the “e”) Yo estoy arreglándome.

More Examples He is showering –Él se está duchando. –Él está duchándose. They are having fun. –Ellos/as se están divirtiendo. –Ellos/as están divirtiéndose.

Vamos a practicar I am falling asleep. You are brushing your teeth. They are waking up. You all (Spain) are putting on clothes.

Vamos a verificar Yo me estoy durmiendo. Yo estoy durmiéndome. Tú te estás cepillando los dientes. Tú estás cepillándote los dientes. Ellos/as se están despertando. Ellos/as están despertándose. Vosotros os estáis poniendo la ropa. Vosotros estáis poniéndos la ropa.
