Cómo decir la hora  ¿Qué hora es?  When you ask the time, you’re using the verb ser, in the 3 rd person SINGULAR. Ser soy I somos eres I X es I son

 When you tell what time it is, you also use the verb, ser, but usually in the 3 rd person PLURAL.  Son las cuatro.  4:00 This is because you’re counting hours, and there is more than one, so it’s plural.

 Son las cinco.  5:00  Son las nueve.  9:00

 There is one exception. At 1:00, there is only one hour to count, so your form of ser is third person SINGULAR.  Es la una.  1:00 (It’s also feminine because la hora is feminine. That’s why it’s la una.

 When you want to say times PAST the hour, here is the pattern:  You add y (and) and tell how many minutes past the hour.  Son las tres y diez. 3:10 Son las diez y ocho. 10:08

 Son las dos y media.  2:30 Son las diez y media.  10:30  When you want to say it’s 30 minutes past the hour, you use “y media”. “Media” = ½ (half past the hour).

 It’s also OK just to say the number of minutes:  Son las doce y treinta.  12:30  Son las doce y quince.  12:15

 When it’s 15 minutes before or past the hour, you can use the word, “cuarto”.  Cuarto = quarter  Son las diez menos cuarto. 9:45 Son las cuatro y cuarto. 4:15

 When it’s more than 30 minutes past the hour, you go up to the next hour and work backwards, using the word menos (minus).  Son las doce menos cinco.  (five minutes to 12:00, or 11:55)

 Son las tres menos quince.  Es la una menos quince.

 The standard form is to use menos, but it is not incorrect to say, “Son las cuatro cuarenta y cinco”, (4:45).  However, for our purposes, you will need to use the standard form: “Son las cinco menos cuarto.” (4:45)

 Tambien:  Noon = mediodía  Midnight = medianoche.
