Nearly 1M€ every year Spanish Living Lab: Initial situation SME LSP For a typical large transport operator: working with almost 6,000 SME road carriers 100,000 manual operations (yearly) average of 25’ for operation and at least 2 phone calls 55’ in case of an incident, which is about 5% Smaller SMEs and freelance truck drivers often have limited or no IT support for their activities, which gives them a disadvantage when working amongst bigger players. These bigger players usually have more advanced tooling but cannot use this to communicate with SME partners and suppliers. Moreover, they does not have the means to communicate electronically with other large transport operators (as Carreras). This endangers the position of the SMEs because they cannot offer the same amount of visibility to the end-customer that their own fleet has. At the same time, it creates inefficiencies for the final customers and logistics services integrators Even a small reduction of the amount of manual operations would have a major impact. Moreover, this situation is applicable to other medium to big transport operators in Spain, as they collaborate continuously with SME operators. Nearly 1M€ every year

Current situation Currently, large operators are deploying their own specific apps to the freelance truck drivers. As a result, small operators and freelancers are able to electronically connect with other partners to exchange information about the transport services, especially on the operations management and the sharing of documents.

Freelances and SMEs will be ranked higher in transport suppliers ranking and therefore, better positioned to extend business. Financial improvements as the invoice process is shortened

Benefits for operators Efficiency in administrative tasks, reduction in manual interactions with SMEs and freelances, Improvement in external fleet management by tracking of transport, Improvement in quality of service, detection of incidents and reaction time, Improvement in service planning and management: no matter if internal or external fleet, Efficiency in invoice management. What’s next? Integration of the sensors in a vehicle: temperature, gases, GPS, etc. Gateway to other platforms and networks: Plug Once Private marketplace with preferred partners, sharing load availability and routes, improving the global planning of services.

Conclusions Using web and mobile Apps as well as connectivity services, large players and SMEs are able to communicate using electronic information exchange Universal and neutral approach as well as a pay-per-use model overcomes existing cost and cultural barriers. The improved visibility facilitites the managing of the service for all the stakeholders while reducing costs This approach enables SMEs and freelance truck drivers to participate in the Physical Internet network to provide transportation services (providing open access to their resources) and, enabling transition from current situation to the physical internet.
