The Passive Voice In Spanish II you learned about the impersonal se and the passive voice with se. Use the impersonal se with the third person singular of a verb (the él form) to generalize. In English we usually say you, one, people or they. Se habla español. Spanish is spoken. (They speak Spanish) ¿C ómo se dice “gato” en francés? How does one say “cat” in French? (How do you say “cat” in French?)

The Passive Voice Spanish also uses the passive se. In this case the verb will be either in the 3 rd person singular or plural depending whether one or more things are receiving the action of the verb. Se vende pan en la panadería. Bread is sold at the bakery. Se compran zapatos en la zapatería. Shoes are purchased at the shoe store.

The true passive voice in Spanish is formed by using this formula: Subject + form of ser + past participle (#/gender)+ (por + who did it. )
