11.2 Por and para ANTE TODO  Unlike English, Spanish has two words that mean “for”: por and para. Sometimes, these two words have translations into English other than “for.”  These two prepositions are not interchangeable. Study the following charts to see how they are used.  As a general guideline, “para” usually looks forward at an action and “por” usually looks backward. This is not the case every time, but it works most of the time. (On the slides, I’ll include F for forward and B for backward to demonstrate when this guideline is applicable.)
