Adjective Agreement

Adjective Agreement Adjectives change to match the nouns they modify. Adjectives must agree with nouns in both number (singular or plural) and gender (masculine or feminine). Just like “cuánto” and “mucho,” all adjectives ending in “o” have four forms.

Un ejemplo: Un libro divertido Unos libros divertidos Una clase divertida Unas clases divertidas Notice the word order. Where does the adjective go?

Práctica: Make these adjectives agree with the nouns they modify: La chica (alto) Los amigos (simpático) El profesor (estricto) Las hermanas (guapo)

Exceptions: Adjectives ending in –e or a consonant have only two forms: singular or plural. They are considered “gender neutral.” Ejemplo: La clase es difícil. Las clases son difíciles.* *For adjectives ending in a consonant add –es to make them plural.

Práctica: Make the adjectives agree with the noun they modify: Los libros (interesante) La profesora (inteligente) Los exámenes (difícil) Las actividades (fácil)

Más práctica: La cafetería/feo Los compañeros/simpático Write a sentence describing each thing of person below using “ser” and the correct form of the adjective: La cafetería/feo Los compañeros/simpático Las clases/aburrido El colegio/grande María/cómico La tarea/difícil La profesora/estricto Juan y Jacobo/alto

Las respuestas: La cafetería es fea. Los compañeros son simpáticos. Las clases son aburridas. El colegio es grande. María es cómica. La tarea es difícil. La profesora es estricta. Juan y Jacobo son altos.
