Stem-changing verbs The stem in the verb pensar, querer, and preferir will change from e to ie in all forms except the nosotros and vosotros.

PENSAR yo pienso (NO CHANGE) tú piensas vosotros pensáis él ellos ella piensa Ud. nos. pensamos (NO CHANGE) vosotros pensáis ellos ellas piensan Uds.

QUERER yo quiero tú quieres él ella quiere Ud. ellas quieren Uds. nos. queremos (NO CHANGE) vosotros queréis ellos ellas quieren Uds.

PREFERIR In PREFERIR, it’s the second “E” that changes from e > ie.

PREFERIR yo prefiero tú prefieres él ella prefiere Ud. nos. preferimos (NO CHANGE) vosotros preferís ellos ellas prefieren Uds.

Other types of stem-changing verbs. The verb costar is also a stem-changing verb. In the stem, the o will change to ue. For our chapter, we will be focused on the third person singular and plural.

COSTAR yo cuesto tú cuestas él ella cuesta Ud. vosotros costáis nos. costamos (NO CHANGE) vosotros costáis ellos ellas cuestan Uds.

Important Rule If there are 2 verbs in one sentence, you only conjugate the first verb. In other words: use the infinitive for any verbs that follow pensar, querer, or preferir. Por ejemplo: Yo quiero comprar una falda en la tienda. Ellas prefieren comer ensaladas.
