Rules To make a sentence negative, you usually put no in front of the verb. –No sacamos buenas notas en la clase de álgebra. Sometimes you can also use a negative word after the verb. –No estudiamos nunca el sábado por la noche.
REMEMBER: SPANISH SENTENCES CAN HAVE A DOUBLE NEGATIVE TO THEM. An affirmative word can NEVER be in a negative sentence!
Affirmative/Negative Words Clarification
Making a sentence negative To make a sentence negative in Spanish, you usually put no in front of the conjugated verb or expression. –In English, you usually use the word “not” after the verb. Where would you put “no” on these sentences? –Me gusta trabajar. –Ella tiene un libro. –Sara llega a tiempo
Sometimes you can replace no with nunca or add nunca to the end of the sentence to really express something NEVER happening.. Replace no with nunca to these sentences. –Sara no pide ayuda. –Jaime no hace una pregunta. –Pablo y Luis no llegan tarde. Now take the same sentences and just add nunca for emphasis.
Siempre can be put in front of the verb or at the beginning or end of the sentence.. –Ellos siempre almuerzan en el café. –Nosotros dormimos de la noche siempre
The same can be done with “ni…ni” to replace “no…o” Replace “no…o” with “ni…ni” –David no juega al básquetbol o al tenis. –Nosotros no almorzamos o bebemos en la clase.
También or tampoco can be added to the beginning or end of a sentence. –Sara no tiene un libro tampoco. –También Paula pide ayuda.
