What is the stem of a verb? It is the part of the verb left after taking away the -ar, -er, or -ir ending. What is the stem of the verb preparar? prepar- What is the stem of the verb comer? com- What is the stem of the verb escribir? escrib-

What is the stem vowel of a verb? It is the last vowel of the stem. What is the stem vowel of preparar? prep-a-r- What is the stem vowel of comer? c-o-m- What is the stem of the verb escribir? escr-i-b-

Does the stem vowel of preparar, comer, and escribir change when they are conjugated? Let’s conjugate comer in the present for the ‘yo’ form. como Did the stem vowel of comer change? No. The same is true of preparar, and escribir.

But how about the verb jugar; does its stem vowel change when we conjugate it? Let’s conjugate it and see: yo juego tú juegas él, ella, Ud. juega nosotros/as jugamos vosotros/as jugáis ellos, ellas, Uds. juegan

No. Not for nosotros or vosotros. So did the stem vowel of jugar change? Yes. For all the forms? No. Not for nosotros or vosotros. Therefore, jugar is a stem changing verb. Now, look jugar up on p. 474 of Panorama. What do you think (u:ue) stands for? The change that the stem vowel undergoes for all the forms of the present except for nosotros and vosotros.
