Apuntes el 17 de diciembre Los verbos de cambio de raíz (e  ie, o  ue) Stem-changing verbs (e  ie, o  ue) Stem-changing verbs are common in Spanish. In this type of verb, the stressed vowel in the verb stem changes when the verb is conjugated. This change occurs in all persons except nosotros/as and vosotros/as.

QUERER (E  IE) (to want, to love) (yo) quiero(nosotros/as) queremos (tú) quieres(vosotros/as) queréis (Ud., él/ella) quiere(Uds., ellos/as) quieren ¿Quieres ir al cine conmigo? Do you want to go the movies with me? Quiero, pero no puedo. Tengo que estudiar. I want to, but I can’t. I have to study.

Other (e  ie) stem-changing verbs include: cerrar (to close) comenzar (to begin) empezar (to begin) entender (to understand) pensar (to think, to intend) perder (to lose) preferir (to prefer)

DORMIR (O  UE) (to sleep) (yo) duermo(nosotros/as) dormimos (tú) duermes(vosotros/as) dormís (Ud., él/ella) duerme(Uds., ellos/as) duermen Los chicos no duermen lo suficiente. The boys don’t sleep enough.

Other (O  UE) verbs include: almorzar (to have lunch) contar (to count, to tell) encontrar (to find) mostrar (to show) poder (to be able, can) recordar (to remember) volver (to return)

JUGAR (to play) is the only (U  UE) verb. (yo) juego(nosotros/as) jugamos (tú) juegas(vosotros/as) jugáis (Ud., él/ella) juega(Uds., ellos/as) juegan In many dialects of Spanish, jugar is followed by a + el, la, los, las when mentioning a sport or game. Juan juega al fútbol. Juan plays soccer. Nosotros jugamos a las damas. We play checkers.

The verbs poder, preferir and querer are often directly followed by an infinitive. No puedo encontrar mi cuaderno. I can’t find my notebook. Prefiero estudiar en casa. I prefer to study at home. Queremos nadar. We want to swim.

The verbs comenzar and empezar require the preposition a when they are followed by an infinitive. Comenzamos a hacer la tarea antes de las cuatro. We begin to do the homework before four o’clock. Empiezan a estudiar después de la escuela. They begin to study after school.
