Mateo 17: En aquel tiempo, Jesús tomó consigo a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan, el hermano de éste, y los hizo subir a solas con él a un monte elevado. 2 Ahí se transfiguró en su presencia: su rostro se puso resplandeciente como el sol y sus vestiduras se volvieron blancas como la nieve.

3 De pronto aparecieron ante ellos Moisés y Elías, conversando con Jesús. 4 Entonces Pedro le dijo a Jesús: “Señor, ¡qué bueno sería quedarnos aquí! Si quieres, haremos aquí tres chozas, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías”. 5 Cuando aún estaba hablando, una nube luminosa los cubrió y de ella salió una voz que decía: “Éste es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo puestas mis complacencias; escúchenlo”.

6 Al oír esto, los discípulos cayeron rostro en tierra, llenos de un gran temor. 7 Jesús se acercó a ellos, los tocó y les dijo: “Levántense y no teman”. 8 Alzando entonces los ojos, ya no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús. 9 Mientras bajaban del monte, Jesús les ordenó: “No le cuenten a nadie lo que han visto, hasta que el Hijo del hombre haya resucitado de entre los muertos”.

Matthew 17: Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And Jesus was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him.

4 Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid.

7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” 8 And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. 9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

The parallels to this passage are in Mark 9:2-8 and Luke 9: For various reasons, this is one of the most significant events in the Life of Christ our Savior.

El evangelio habla de la Transfiguración del Señor. Los pasajes paralelos son Marcos 9:2-8 y Lucas 9: Por varias razones, este es uno de los más importantes acontecimientos en la vida de Cristo nuestro Salvador.

The word “transfigure” means to change the form or appearance of; metamorphose. The Greek words used by the evangelists points out that the nature of this transformation is such that it comes from within. It was due to an internal “metamorphosis.” This was soon to pass away, for the permanent transfiguration and glorification could only come through his sufferings.

La palabra “transfigurar” significa cambiar la forma o apariencia; (en Griego: metamorfosis). Esta palabra usada por el evangelista indica que por naturaleza esta transfiguración es tal que viene de adentro. Es una metamorfosis interna. Esto pronto iba a pasar, pero la transfiguración y glorificación permanente de Cristo solo podía venir por medio de su sufrimiento.

Jesus prepared us for his Passion by manifesting his divinity. He gave us a glimpse of that which we will see in eternity. Before that, He had to cross from one form of existence to another. And in a way we are invited to do the same, by faith.

Jesús nos preparó para su Pasión mostrándonos su divinidad. Nos concedió ver por un momento lo que vamos a ver en la eternidad. Pero antes, Él tuvo que cruzar de una forma de existir a otra. Y de cierta manera, estamos invitados hacer lo mismo, por la fe.

Moses and Elijah conversed with Jesus about this topic (Luke 9:31). They spoke about his “exodus”, his “departure.” They saw the real and perfect “Exodus” in the passion and resurrection of Jesus.

The Transfiguration is a grace to understand the awesomeness of his coming suffering. The Exodus of Moses lasted 40 years. The Exodus of Jesus lasted 40 days after his resurrection (until his Ascension). Our Lenten season lasts only 40 days.

La Transfiguración es una gracia para entender la maravilla de su sufrimiento que pronto iba a venir. El Éxodo de Moisés duro 40 años. El Éxodo de Jesús duro 40 días desde su Resurrección hasta su Ascensión. Nuestra Cuaresma dura solo 40 días.

Note that the word “Exit” (derived from the word “exodus”) over a door says to us that if we pass by this point, a change will occur. It is like going from one room to another. It means: “a change is coming”. This is the way to go. Beyond this point, you will get a different “vista”. Something new is about to happen.

Noten que la palabra “Éxodo” (derivado de la palabra exodus), sobre tantas puertas nos dice que si pasamos por ese punto, un cambio va a ocurrir. Será como pasar de un cuarto para otro. Significa que : “un cambio viene”. Este es el rumbo al cambio. Más allá de este punto, tendrás un punto de vista diferente. Algo nuevo está por ocurrir.

With Jesus, death was not to be the end. Rather, it was a necessary gateway into the Resurrection that will immediately follow. The Transfiguration is a sure pledge of Christ’s future glory. It was a hint of that which was to come.

Con Jesús, la muerte no fue el fin. Al contrario, fue una entrada a su Resurrección que pronto iba a venir. La Transfiguración es una promesa segura de la gloria de Cristo que aseguradamente ha de venir.

“Exodus” is the same word used to speak regarding death in 2 Peter 1:15. “I will see to it that after my “departure” (exodus), you may be able at any time to recall these things.” The author speaks in the name of Peter: “We were eyewitnesses of his majesty.”

“Éxodo” es la misma palabra usada para hablar acerca de la muerte en 2 Pedro 1:15. “Pondré empeño en que, incluso después de mi muerte, (partida, éxodo), puedan a cualquier hora recordar estas cosas.” El autor habla en el nombre de San Pedro.

“We were with him on the holy mountain.” (2 Peter 1:18). “You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19).

St. Paul in 2 Corinthians 3:18 says we are called to behold the glory of the Lord with unveiled face. When a man turns to the Lord a veil is removed. That happens when we live according to the Spirit. He changes us into his likeness from one degree of glory to another.

San Pablo en 2 Corintios 3:18 dice que somos llamados a ver la gloria del Señor con cara descubierta. Cuando una persona se vuelve hacia el Señor, se quita el velo. Esto sucede cuando vivimos según el Espirito. Él nos cambia a su semejanza de un grado de gloria a otro.

Jesus in John 17:24 said: “Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world.”

For now, the Christian’s life is hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3-4). When Christ shall appear on the Last Day, then the Christian also shall appear with Him in glory, and God shall be all in all (1 Corinthians 15:28). “We who first hoped in Christ have been destined and appointed to live for the praise of his glory” (Ephesians 1:12).

Por lo pronto, la vida del cristiano esta escondida con Cristo en Dios (Colosenses 3:3-4). Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI once said that “when one has the grace to sense a strong experience of God, it is as though seeing something similar to what the disciples experienced during the Transfiguration; for a moment they experienced ahead of time something that will constitute the happiness of paradise.”

Our own transformation will also occur in prayer. It is in prayer that we should make our most important decisions. It should be in the presence of the Lord. We have the benefit of the Lord’s example, plus we have the teachings of the Apostles in the New Testament, and the example and teachings of so many saints down through the centuries. They all found strength in prayer, and clarity in their discernment, and perseverance unto the end.

Nuestra propia transformación también va a ocurrir en la oración. Es en la oración que debemos hacer nuestras más importantes decisiones. Debe ser en la presencia del Señor. Tenemos el ejemplo del Señor, y además tenemos las enseñanzas de los Apóstoles en el Nuevo Testamento, y el ejemplo de tantos santos por los siglos. Todos ellos encontraron fuerza en la oración, y claridad en su discernimiento, y perseverancia hasta el fin.

Let us open up our hearts to the voice of the Lord in his holy Word. Let his Light transform us from the inside out. “Restore our sight that we may look upon your Son who calls us to repentance and a change of heart” (Prayer of the Church).

Vamos a abrir nuestros corazones a la voz del Señor en su Santa Palabra. Que la Luz nos transforme de adentro para afuera. “Restaura nuestra vista para poder mirar a tu Hijo que nos llama al arrepentimiento y cambio de corazón” (Oración de la Iglesia).
