Spanish Stem-Changing Verbs e→ie e→i o→ue u→ue

How do these verbs work? First, let’s review what they have that is not new to us.

1. Los verbos de zapato tienen las conjugaciones regulares

o as a amos áis an o es e emos éis en o es e imos ís en

Stem changing verbs have regular conjugations, but the stem changes. The changes take place in the shape of a shoe.

Notice that the (1)nosotros and (2)vosotros forms are outside the shoe. That’s because they DON’T have a stem change.

Let’s start with and e to ie verb. Querer – (ie) to want, love First, let ’ s just add all the correct endings.

2. Remember how regular verbs have the same stem pattern in all six conjugation forms. Hablar – ar = stem Hablohablamos Hablashabláis Hablahablan comer – er = stem comocomemos comescoméis comecomen vivir – ir = stem vivovivimos vivesvivís viveviven

They look like boxes. hablar – ar = stem hablohablamos hablashabláis hablahablan comer – er = stem comocomemos comescoméis comecomen vivir – ir = stem vivovivimos vivesvivís viveviven

Querer oemos eséis een

Now, let ’ s add our stem change. Remember, only the e in the stem can change. quer er cerra r Pensar sentir If there are two e ’ s in the stem, the second one always changes. prefer ir empez ar Encender

Now let ’ s change the stems. Remember, e can change to ie only within the boot. This means the nosotros and vosotros forms never change!

Querer quierquer quierqueréis quier o emos e es en

Querer (e – ie) to want/love quiero quieres quierequieren queremos queréis

The u→ue and o→ue verbs work the same way. Poder Jugar Dormir to be able to (can) to play to sleep

First, find the o or u in the stem that is going to change to ue P o der Jugar D o rmir

Then, decide which verb endings you will use. Let’s start with: Jugar

jugar (u-ue) – to play juego juegas juegajuegan jugamos jugáis

puedo puedes puede podemos podéis pueden Poder – to be able to (can)

duermo duermes duerme dormimos dormís duermen dormir – to sleep
