Dec. 23, 2012 Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The readings for today’s Mass speak of small beginnings and great endings. The first reading from the Prophet Micah 5:1-4 speaks about Bethlehem, “too small to be among the clans of Judah.” Even so a great ruler for Israel would arise there. He would “stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the Lord.” His greatness would reach the ends of the earth. We now know that Micah was speaking about Jesus.

Hoy es el cuarto domingo de Adviento Hoy es el cuarto domingo de Adviento. Las lecturas de la Misa de hoy hablan de comienzos pequeños que llegan a grandes conclusiones. La primera lectura del Profeta Miqueas 5:1-4 habla de Belén, “pequeña entre las aldeas de Judá.” No obstante un gran jefe de Israel iba a salir de allí. “El se levantara para pastorear a su pueblo con la fuerza y la majestad del Señor, su Dios. The second reading for the Mass is from the Book of Hebrews 10:5-10 The second reading for the Mass is from the Book of Hebrews 10:5-10. It portrays Christ speaking in eternity. He says: “I come to do your will, O God.” It was probably disconcerting to the Jews who offered holocausts and sin offerings. For it says God neither desired nor delighted in those things. In effect, this takes away the old way of doing things, and establishes a new way: that of offering the body of Jesus Christ once for all, to pay for our sins.

The Alleluia verse at Mass is a selection from Luke 1:38 where Our Lady says: “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” It is the same thing that Jesus says in the Book of Hebrews. And it is the same thing that Jesus taught us to say in the Our Father: “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

It occurs to me that the whole Bible is about God making his will known to us. God’s will was to make Adam and Eve according to his image and likeness. That meant they had a free will; they were not like the animals. They were free to reject God’s will, and make their own decisions. And they did just that when they disobeyed God.

It is called the Original Sin It is called the Original Sin. Jesus had to come into the world to save us from the consequences of that sin. When we say “Your will be done” we get closer to being like Jesus. We conform our will to the will of God. It so happens that the will is that part of the heart by which we make decisions. So ultimately it is all about the heart.

When we say the Rosary we remember this passage and how God’s plan came to be accepted by her. In the Mystery of the Annunciation (Luke 1:28-32), the Angel Gabriel announces that she will conceive and bear a son, and he shall be called Jesus.

St. Paul in Galatians 4:4-7 says: “When the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, so that we might receive adoption as sons (and daughters). God has sent his Spirit into our hears, crying: “Abba! Father!” So we are no longer slaves but children of God, and therefore heirs.”

San Pablo en Galatas 4:4-7 dice: “Cuando vino el cumplimiento del tiempo, Dios envió a su Hijo, nacido de una mujer... para que recibiésemos la adopción de hijos. This means that at the Annunciation God was beginning to set us all free from the slavery to sin and death. The seemingly small beginning at Nazareth led to the Birth of Jesus at Bethlehem and to a great beginning of the reign of God on earth in the person of Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior. It is awesome in dimensions. It is no small thing.

Esto quiere decir que en la Anunciación Dios estaba comenzando nuestra liberación de la esclavitud al pecado y a la muerte. Lo que pareció ser pequeño comienzo en Nazaret nos llevo al nacimiento de Jesús en Belén. Esto fue un gran comienzo del reino de Dios sobre la tierra en la Persona de Jesucristo nuestro Salvador. Todo esto es maravilloso en dimensión. No es cosa pequeña.

Our Lady was alert to the coming of the Lord Our Lady was alert to the coming of the Lord. She had been vigilant in prayer. She had prepared well for the coming of the Messiah. She listened to the small voice speaking to her in the silence. She checked out what the Angel told her when she sought out her cousin Elizabeth. And as a result great things have come about.

We need to do the same thing We need to do the same thing. We need be alert to God speaking to us in a small voice in our hearts, in silent prayer. Great things will come about for us, too. For we are heirs of the promise, says St. Paul. If we are removed from God, we are barren. If we are in union with God, we shall be fruitful eternally. “Nothing is impossible for God!” There is still hope!

Necesitamos hacer lo mismo Necesitamos hacer lo mismo. Necesitamos estar alertas a Dios que nos hable con una pequeña voz al inspirarnos en nuestros corazones, en la oración en silencio. Grandes cosas sucederán a consecuencia para nosotros también. Porque somos herederos de la promesa, como nos dice San Pablo. Si nos removemos de Dios, seremos infértiles. Pero si nos unimos a Dios, daremos fruto eterno. “¡Nada es imposible para Dios! ¡Todavía hay esperanza!
