24 Yo les aseguro que si el grano de trigo, sembrado en la tierra, no muere, queda infecundo; pero si muere, producirá mucho fruto. 25 El que se ama a sí mismo, se pierde; el que se aborrece a sí mismo en este mundo, se asegura para la vida eterna. 26 El que quiera servirme, que me siga, para que donde yo este también este mi servidor. El que me sirve será honrado por mi Padre.

27 Ahora que tengo miedo, ¿le voy a decir a mi Padre: ‘Padre, líbrame de esta hora’? No, pues precisamente para esta hora he venido. 28 Padre, dale gloria a tu nombre”. Sé oyó entonces una voz que decía: “Lo he glorificado y volveré a glorificarlo”. 29 De entre los que estaban ahí presentes y oyeron aquella voz, unos decían que había sido un trueno; otros, que le había hablado un ángel. 30 Pero Jesús les dijo: “Esa voz no ha venido por mí, sino por ustedes.

31 Esta llegando el juicio de este mundo; ya va a ser arrojado el príncipe de este mundo, 32 Cuando yo sea levantado de la tierra, atraeré a todos hacia mí”. 33 Dijo esto, indicando de que manera habría de morir. Palabra del Señor

The Father will honor whoever serves me.

27 “I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder; but others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come for my sake but for yours.

31 Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32 And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” 33 He said this indicating the kind of death he would die. Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on John 12: Reflexiones en Juan 12: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Mar. 22, 2015 “Unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains only a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it brings forth much fruit” (John 12:24). As we get closer to the celebration of the death of the Lord, it is good to begin to enter into his beautiful sentiments. “Put on the mind of Christ” (Philippians 2:5), says St. Paul.

“En verdad os digo, si el grano de trigo no cae en la tierra y muere, quedará solo; pero si muere, producirá mucho fruto” (Juan 12:24). Al acercarnos mas a la celebración de la muerte del Señor, es bueno comenzar a entrar a sus bellísimos sentimientos. “Pónganse la mente de Cristo” (Filipenses 1:5), dice San Pablo.

When the Greeks came looking for Jesus, it was a sign for the Lord. He knew it was time for him to be “glorified”. His character was one of a humble servant, who knew what the Father wanted of him. “In human form, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:8). There was a price to be paid for his glory. It would involve a lot of suffering, humiliation, pain and sorrow. All of this was for you and me.

Cuando los Griegos llegaron buscando a Jesús, fue una seña para el Señor. Él supo que era tiempo para que Él fuera “glorificado”. Su carácter era uno de un siervo humilde, que sabia lo que el Padre quería de Él. “En forma humana, se humillo a sí mismo y obedeció hasta la muerte, y una muerte en la cruz” (Filipenses 2:8). Había un precio que pagar por su gloria. Implicaría mucho sufrir, y mucha humillación, pena y dolor. Y todo esto fue por ti y por mí.

When he said “He who loves his life, loses it,” he was speaking on his own behalf. He loved life. He was not thinking about himself. At his last supper, Jesus said: “No greater love is there, than a man give his life for his friends” (John 15:13). This is what He did.

Cuando dijo: “Aquel que ama su vida, la pierde,” hablaba de sí mismo. Él amaba la vida. Sin embargo no estaba pensando de sí mismo. En su ultima cena, Jesús dijo: “No hay amor más grande, que un hombre dé su vida por sus amigos” (Juan 15:13.) Y esto fue lo que Él hizo.

The Lord said his soul was “troubled”. Clearly he was emotionally moved as he realized his enemies were closing in on him. We know that he wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41). He wept because they had not known the hour of his visitation. In Luke 13:34 he said: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings and you would not!” How tender the heart of the Lord!

El Señor dijo que su alma se sentía “turbada”. Claro esta que se sentía profundamente conmovido. Él sabia que sus enemigos se acercaban para matarlo. Mientras tanto, Jesús lloró sobre Jerusalén (Lucas 19.41). Lloró porque no habían reconocido la hora de su visita. En Lucas 13:34 dice: “¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas y apedreas a los mensajeros que Dios te envía! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos, como la gallina junta sus pollitos bajo las alas, pero ustedes no quisieron!” ¡ Que tierno el corazón del Señor !

In contrast, the hearts of his enemies had grown cold. Matthew 13:15 says, “their hearts had grown dull, their ears were heavy of hearing, their eyes were closed.” They were asleep spiritually. They had numbed out emotionally. We don’t hear anything about how they felt. We do know: “They did not have the love of God in their hearts” (John 5:42). They had no love for Jesus. They were blind to his beauty and deaf to his message.

En contraste, los corazones de sus enemigos se habían enfriado. Mateo 13:15 dice: “Se ha endurecido el corazón de este pueblo, y se han hecho duros de oídos, y han cerrados sus ojos.” Estaban dormidos espiritualmente. Emocionalmente, estaban sin sentido. No se oye nada de cómo se sentían. Pero si sabemos que “no tenían el amor de Dios en sus corazones” (Juan 5:42). No tenían amor por Jesús. Estaban ciegos a su belleza, y sordos a su mensaje.

This is a good time for self-scrutiny. Have I “numbed out” spiritually? Do I sense the love of God in my heart? Am I so hard-hearted that I am somewhat unaware of his many blessings? When was the last time I expressed my gratitude to the Lord and to others who have helped me in his name? Is my life centered in Christ?

Es bueno ahora preguntarse: ¿Estoy sin sentido espiritual? ¿Siento el amor de Dios en mi corazón? ¿Estoy yo tan endurecido de corazón tal que no me doy cuenta de sus muchas bendiciones? ¿Cuándo fue la ultima vez que le di las gracias al Señor, y a otros que me han ayudado en su nombre? ¿Esta mi vida centrada en Cristo?

We have seen the beautiful sentiments of love and humility and obedience of the Lord. As he saw the end approaching, he got ready to go the distance. He was not about to flee. He was faithful unto the end! How about you?

Hemos visto los bellísimos sentimientos de amor y humildad y obediencia del Señor. Al ver que su fin se acercaba, se preparo para ir hasta el final. De ninguna manera saldría de fuga. ¡Fue fiel hasta el fin! ¿Y tú?
