There are a few ways to express a need in Spanish

1. Necesitar- to need (it’s a regular “ar” verb: o, as, a, amos, aís, an) necesitar + infinitive/noun Ex. Necesito estudiar español I need to study Spanish Necesito una aspiradora nueva I need a new vacuum

2. Tengo que- a need to do something tengo que + infinitive Ex. Tengo que poner la mesa I need to set the table

3. Deber que- a need to do something that you SHOULD do… something you have a MORAL OBLIGATION to do deber + infinitive (a regular “er” verb: o, es, e, emos, éis, en) Ex. Debo ayudar a mi madre I should help my mother Ex. 6, Pg. 226

El presente de los verbos con el cambio e  ie Some verbs in Spanish require a spelling change in all conjugations of the stem except Nosotros and Vosotros. This stem change does not effect the verb endings. Its annoying, but you just have to memorize it.

Other ie stem changing verbs: cerrar- to close empezar- to begin preferir- to prefer querrer- to want sentir-to feel tener and venir both have ie stem changes EXCEPT in the YO form. Put ALL of these on a verb sheet, then do: Pg. 110, EX 6

Pensar: un poco más 1. when followed immediately by an infinitive, pensar indicates what someone plans or intends to do. Ejemplo: Pienso hacer un viaje a Israel. I plan to take a trip to Israel. ¿Cuándo piensas ir? When do you intend to go?

2. When combined with EN, pensar is used to indicate who, or what someone is thinking about. Ejemplo: ¿En qué piensas? What are you thinking about? Pienso en estudiar español en España. I am thinking about studying Spanish in Spain.

3. Pensar may be combined with DE to ask for an opinion. As a response, pensar is used with que to express an opinion or thought. Ejemplo: ¿Qué piensas de la lámpara nueva? What do you think of the new lamp? Pienso que es muy bonita I think that it is very pretty
