Matthew 12: While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak with you.”

48 But he said in reply to the one who told him, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on Matthew 12: Reflexiones en Mateo 12: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. July 21, 2009 In order to understand this passage, it will be necessary to study the context as is found in the New Testament.

It is one of the most tragic of human stories to know that when God was made flesh in Jesus Christ, his own people did not recognize him. John 1:10 says: “He was in the world, and the world was made through him yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not.”

In Mark 3:20-21 it says: “He went home, and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for people were saying, ‘He is beside himself.’ ”

In John 7:1-13 we see the same thing. Rejection. “ The Jews sought to kill him. The feast of Tabernacles was close at hand. So his brother said to him, “Leave here, and go to Judea, that your disciples may see the works you are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world. For even his brothers did not believe in him.”

To believe in someone is to commit yourself to that person. Jesus wanted us to believe in Him and in his message: that He was the Messiah, the Anointed, sent by the Father, for our salvation. And when he came, he had compassion on us teaching by example, what love is, fidelity, and holiness. To believe in Jesus is to commit ourselves to Him in love, with obedience, with fidelity unto death.

By contrast we have John the Baptist. He also was a cousin of Jesus. He is our model. He jumped with joy when Jesus first came close to him in his mother’s womb. He introduces his disciples to Jesus saying: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:36).

He spoke of Jesus openly and bravely. He did not go around speaking in a low voice out of fear or cowardice. And he committed his life in obedience to our heavenly Father. Thus he sealed his life with his own blood. What a great example we have in John the Baptist!
