Marcos 6: Enseguida hizo que sus discípulos subieran a la barca y fueran delante de Él al otro lado, a Betsaida, mientras Él despedía a la multitud.

46 Y después de despedirse de ellos, se fue al monte a orar. 47 Al anochecer, la barca estaba en medio del mar, y Él estaba solo en tierra.

48 Y al verlos remar fatigados, porque el viento les era contrario, como a la cuarta vigilia de la noche, fue hacia ellos andando sobre el mar, y quería pasarles de largo. 49 Pero cuando ellos le vieron andando sobre el mar, pensaron que era un fantasma y se pusieron a gritar;

50 porque todos le vieron y se turbaron. Pero enseguida Él habló con ellos y les dijo: ¡Tened ánimo; soy yo, no temáis! 51 Y subió con ellos a la barca, y el viento se calmó; y ellos estaban asombrados en gran manera,

52 porque no habían entendido lo de los panes, sino que su mente estaba embotada. Palabra del Señor

Mark 6: Then he made his disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side toward Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.

46 And when he had taken leave of them, he went off to the mountain to pray. 47 When it was evening, the boat was far out on the sea and he was alone on shore.

48 Then he saw that they were tossed about while rowing, for the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them. 49 But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out.

50 They had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke with them, “ Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid ! ” 51 He got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were (completely) astounded.

52 They had not understood the incident of the loaves. On the contrary, their hearts were hardened. Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on Mark 6: Reflexiónes en Marcos 6: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Jan. 9, 2008 The divine Infant Jesus could not say a word. We all joined the Virgin Mary and Good St. Joseph as they pondered over what would be when this child grew up.

El divino Infante Jesús no podía decir ni una sola palabra. Nos unimos a la Virgen Maria y al buen Señor San José en adoración, al ponderar acerca de los iba a suceder cuando este Niño creciera.

Today we see that he grew up to be a man of compassion, ever ready to help those in need. In the storms of life, he is always there with the words: “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid.”

En las lecturas de hoy vemos que cuando creció llego a ser un hombre de compasión, siempre listo para ayudar a los necesitados. En las tormentas de la vida, él siempre está allí con sus palabras: “Animo, soy yo, no tengan miedo.”

Mark tells us Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and make their way across the Sea of Galilee. He went into the hills to pray alone. From where he was he could see they were distressed in rowing against the wind.

San Marcos nos dice que Jesús hizo a sus discípulos subirse al barco y dirigirse al oro lado del Mar de Galilea. Subió a los cerros a rezar a solas. De done estaba, pudo ver que los discípulos batallaban cuando remaban contra el viento.

At about 3 a.m. he goes out to rescue them, walking on the water. When they see him, they were terrified, thinking it was a ghost. But Jesus immediately spoke to them and said: “Do not be afraid, it is I.”

Así como a las 3 de la mañana salió a rescatarlos, andando sobre las aguas. Al verlo, se asustaron, pensando que era un fantasma. Pero Jesús inmediatamente les hablo diciendo: “No teman, soy yo.”

The early Fathers of the Church had much to say about this event. Origen (Commentary on Matthew ll.5) notes Jesus wished to train the apostles. They needed to learn to trust in him, and be victorious over all kinds of difficulties. In this case it is the contrary wind and the huge waves which threaten their lives.

Los Padres Tempranos de la Iglesia tenían mucho que decir acerca de este acontecimiento. Origen (Comentario Acerca Mateo 11.5), indica que Jesús quería entrenar bien a los apóstoles. Necesitaban aprender a confiar en él, para ser victoriosos sobre toda clase de dificultades. En este caso era el viento contrario y las grandes olas que amenazaban sus vidas.

Jesus is the Word. Today we are to read the Word of God; it is the Word of Jesus. It will give us the victory over the evil one and over life’s temptations. And yes, he still works miracles!

Jesús es la Palabra. Hoy en día sabemos que él sigue atendiéndonos por la Palabra de Dios. La Palabra nos concederá la victoria sobre el maligno y sobre las tentaciones de la vida. Y sí, ¡también sigue haciendo milagros!

Why pass by them? Augustine (The Harmony of the Gospels 2.47) says there is a spiritual significance to this. The apostles were still so far from recognizing Jesus as Lord, that they thought he was a ghost.

¿Porqué estaba por pasarlos? San Agustín (La Armonía de Los Evangelios 2.47) dice que hay un significado espiritual a este punto. Los apóstoles todavía estaban lejos de reconocer a Jesús como el Señor. Sus corazones estaban duros (Marcos 6.52), y no habían comprendido de los panes. Pensaban que lo que veían era un fantasma.

His intent in passing them by was to elicit those outcries in response to which he would then come to bring relief. Whenever the Lord sees us suffering in the human condition of angst, he is ready to help us immediately: “Be of good cheer, it is I; be not afraid.”

Su intención en pasarlos fue para sacar de ellos gradualmente y sin violencia los clamores a los cuales él traería socorro. Cuando el Señor nos ve sufriendo en las angustias de la vida, está listo para ayudarnos inmediatamente. “No teman, soy yo.”

A holy man by the name of Prudentius (Against Symmachus 2) wrote: “I am as one whose unnumbered sins have shipwrecked on the rolling seas… How easily can I be shipwrecked… unless you, almighty Christ, stretch forth your hand with help divine.”

Un hombre santo por nombre de Prudéntius (Contra Symmachus 2) escribe: “Yo soy como uno cuyos pecados sin numero han causado naufragar... solo que tú, Jesucristo todopoderoso, estires tu mano y me concedas ayuda divina.”

We all need Jesus to teach us how to avoid spiritual shipwreck. He teaches us directly in prayer, and through our elder brothers and sisters who are prepared to assist us by their wisdom, their experience. A good spiritual director, a holy priest, through the Sacraments, can also be of great help.

Todos necesitamos a Jesús que nos enseñe como evitar el naufrago espiritual. Él nos enseña directamente en la oración, y por medio de nuestros hermanos y hermanas que están preparados para asistirnos con su sabiduría, su experiencia. Un buen director espiritual, un santo sacerdote, por medio de los Sacramentos, también pueden ser de gran ayuda.

St. Augustine sees the wood of the boat as a reminder of the wood of the cross of Jesus. (Tractate 2.4, On John). There is no way to cross over the rough seas of life over to the homeland unless you are carried by the wood. “Ungrateful man, do you ridicule him who has come to you that you may return?

San Agustín ve en el madero del barco un recordatorio del madero de la cruz de Jesús (Tractate 2.4, Acerca Juan). He himself became the way, and this through the sea. (Matthew ). Jesus wants to show you that there is a way across the sea. But you, who cannot in any way walk on the sea, let yourself be carried by the ship, be carried by the wood!”

El mismo se hizo el camino, y esto por los mares (Mateo ). Jesús nos quiere enseñar que hay una manera de cruzar el mar. Pero tú, que no puedes de ninguna manera caminar sobre el mar, dejate llevar por el barco, ¡ que te carge el madero ! ”

“By his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53.5). So you see, a little reflection with the help of the early Fathers of the Church goes a long way to finding positive applications from the scriptures, and resolving our problems. Amen!
