Preterite and Imperfect Preterite – Tener-to receive/to have (like a baby) Ella tuvo una carta ayer. – Estar-to arrive Estuvimos a la escuela a las 8:00. Imperfect – Age and feelings (tener and estar) Ella estaba triste. Yo tenía tres años. Teníamos hambre. – location (estar) Ella estaba en la biblioteca.

More uses of the Imperfect Imperfect – time (ser) Eran las dos. – past progressive Ella estaba jugando al fútbol.

More Uses of the Imperfect Imperfect – Attitudes and desires Quería ser veterinaria y mi hermano deseaba ser bombero. – weather Hacía mucho sol. No llovía mucho.

Other Verbs With Meaning Changes Conocer – Imperfect-to know who somebody was. Mario conocía a Susana.- Mario knew Susana. – Preterite-to have MET someone for the first time. Mario conoció a Susana.-Mario met Susana

Other Verbs With Meaning Changes Poder – Imperfect-to have the ability to do it (??? on follow through) Ana podía entrar la clase. (Ana was able to enter the room—we don’t know if she did or not) – Preterite-to be able to do it & succeed or fail (action has been completed—there is follow through) Ana no pudo entrar la clase. (Ana failed to enter the class—she tried and couldn’t do it)

Other Verbs With Meaning Changes Querer – Imperfect- To have wanted something or not wanted something. Yo quería ganar la lotería (I wanted to win the lottery) – Preterite-to want something AND to do it or refuse it (follow through and action) Ella quiso ir a Homecoming con el caballero (She wanted to go with him—and she DID)
