Uses of the preterite vs. imperfect

We use it to talk about an action or series of actions completed in the past. Examples: Llegó a la casa, preparó la comida, y se acostó. Fui a mi cuarto y me acosté.

We use it to talk about the beginning or ending of an action in the past. Examples: Empezó a trabajar en un restaurante. (comenzó) Dejó de llover.

We use it to talk about facts or series of events in a specific period of time in the past. Examples: Hoy llegó a casa temprano. El sol salió a las cinco de mañana.

We use it when there is an interruption of an action in progress. The action that interrupts it is written in the preterite. Examples: Abuelita llamó mientras comíamos. Mí mamá preparaba la cena cuando llegó mi papá.

We use it to talk about the age of a person in the past. Examples Señorita Salvo tenía 5 años en Mi abuelo tenía ochenta años cuando murió.

We use it to talk about an action in progress that has been interrupted by another action. The action in progress is written in the Imperfect. Examples Mi mamá preparaba la cena cuando llegó mi papá. Mi abuela llamó mientras comíamos. Me estaba bañando cuando llamó mi amiga.
