El Pretérito The preterite is used to describe completed actions in the past. It is used to state actions that began and ended at a specific time in the past. It is often the equivalent of the English “ed”.

El Imperfecto The imperfect is used describe continuous, repeated past actions. It is used to describe things that happened over and over (habitual). It is also used for past descriptions. (APAWTALE)

Los dos tiempos Because each tense is used for very specific things, there are some key words that indicate whether you would use the imperfect or the preterite. When you see one of these words, you will usually use the tense that is associated with it. Ejemplos Pretérito 1.Ellos fueron al cine el sábado pasado. 1.They went to the movies last Saturday. 2.Ayer se sentaron en la última fila. 2.Yesterday they sat in the last row. 3.Anoche se acostaron temprano. 3.Last night, they went to bed early. Imperfecto 1.Ellos iban al cine todos los sábados. 1.They used to go to the movies every Saturday. 2.Siempre se sentaban en la primera fila. 2.They always used to sit in the first row. 3.Todas las noches se acostaban tarde. 3.Every night, they went (used to go) to bed late.
