Present Progressive Review Do you remember the present progressive tense? It’s used when a person wants to say that an action is happening “right now.”

Present Progressive Review It uses the present tense of estar + the present participle. No puedo ir al cine. Estoy estudiando para el examen.

Imperfect Progressive To describe something that was taking place over a period of time in the past, use the imperfect progressive, which uses the imperfect tense of estar + the present participle.

Imperfect Progressive Las víctimas estaban llorando porque tenían miedo. Los niños estaban corriendo en el parque.

Imperfect Progressive and Preterite Note that the imperfect progressive describes what was taking place while the preterite tells a specific occurrence in the past or interrupts the action.

Imperfect Progressive and Preterite Él estaba corriendo cuando se lastimó el tobillo.

Imperfect Progressive Participles The present and imperfect progressive tenses use the same regular and irregular present participles.

Imperfect Progressive Regular Participles For –ar verbs add -ando For –er and –ir verbs add –iendo trabajartrabaj ando corrercorriendo compartircompartiendo

Imperfect Progressive Irregular Participles Remember, to form the present participle of -ir stem-changing verbs, e changes to i and o changes to u:

Imperfect Progressive and Pronouns When you use pronouns with the imperfect progressive, you can put them before estar or attach them to the participle.

Imperfect Progressive and Pronouns ¿Qué estaba haciendo cuando te cortaste? Estaba afeitándome. Or Me estaba afeitando.

Remember that to express the idea of what is happening right now, you use the present progressive. Por el momento, estoy cocinando. To express the idea of what was happening, you would use the imperfect progressive. Estaba limpiando cuando se resbaló. (imperfect progressive) (preterit)
