¿IMPERFECTO O PRETERITO? Spanish has two basic ways to talk about the past: 1) Preterite and the 2) Imperfect Let’s look at some of the differences in how each tense in used.

El Pretérito The Preterite tense is used: 1) to talk about an action in a specific point of time or repeated a specific number of times 2) for actions that were part of a chain of events 3) for an action that interrupted something already going on OR 4) to state the beginning or end of an action.

Usos del Preterite Here’s an acronym to help you remember the uses of the PRETERITE: Beginning Over-with or cOmpleted action Specific event or something occurring during a specific period of time Chain of events Interruption - describe what was going on (imperfect/imperfect progressive) when something else happened (preterite) End of an action **KEY WORD: SPECIFIC!!!

BOSCIE B: BEGINNING (start) To state the beginning of an action. - La película empezó a las 3:00 de la tarde.

BOSCIE O: Over-with or cOmpleted action -Gloria llegó tarde a clase ayer. -¿Hiciste la tarea anoche? -Ayer asistí a una fiesta.

BOSCIE S: SPECIFIC event or something ocurring during a specific period of time or number of times. -Juan se levantó hoy a las 7:00. -Ellos esquiaron dos veces el invierno pasado.

BOSCIE I: INTERRUPTION - describe what was going on (imperfect / imperfect progressive) when something else happened (preterite) -Mientras Uds. dormían, el teléfono sonó (rang). - Yo manejaba cuando me paró el policía.

BOSCIE C: CHAIN OF EVENTS -Cristián habló con su novia, salió de la casa y manejó al cine. -Nosotros llegamos a casa, comimos y vimos la tele.

BOSCIE E: end of an action - Anoche terminé mi ensayo para la clase de inglés.

El Imperfecto The imperfect tense is used when we talk about a past action that: happened many times -Todos los domingos comprábamos un helado con mis abuelos. 2) was in progress (“was -ing”/”were -ing”) -Ellos bailaban y charlaban durante la fiesta. 3) described a condition, emotion, situation or scene. -Yo vivía en una casa que era grande y bonita.

El Imperfecto The imperfect "sets a scene". For example, it describes what your house or dog used to look like and what your family was like. Think of looking at a photograph and describing the people in it and what they were doing. Eran las nueve de la noche. Era viernes. Hacía mal tiempo. Llovía. Todos estábamos en casa. Mamá y Papá veían la tele; yo leía una novela de StarWars; mi hermana hablaba por teléfono con su novio en su cuarto. Bubba (nuestro perro) dormía detrás del sofa. 12
