THE – definite article  Used with nouns to indicate SPECIFIC persons, places, or things.  Articles match in gender (masculine / feminine) and number (singular / plural)  Even if referring to objects, all nouns are either masculine or feminine.  Nouns ending in –o are USUALLY masculine.  Nouns ending in –a are USUALLY feminine.
