Vocabulary of Instruction: Geometry Grade 4

Parallel Lines/Líneas paralelas Definition: Parallel lines remain the same distance apart over their entire length. No matter how far you extend them, they will never meet. Definición: Dos líneas son paralelas cuando se mantienen a la misma distancia y nunca se encuentran.

Perprendicular lines/Líneas perpendiculares Definition: A line is perpendicular to another if it meets or crosses it at right angles (90°). Definición: Líneas que se encuentran en ángulos rectos (90°).

Symmetry/Simetría Definition: Symmetry is when one shape becomes exactly like another if you flip, slide or turn it. Definición: Simetría es cuando una figura se vuelve exactamente igual que otra si la volteas o la giras.

Line of Symmetry/Línea de simetría Definition: The imaginary line where you could fold the image and have both halves match exactly. Definición: La línea de simetría de una figura es una línea que divide la figura en dos partes congruentes que son una imagen espejo una de otra.

Congruent Figures/Figuras Congruentes Definition: Figures that have the same shape and size. Definición: Tienen la misma forma y el mismo tamaño.

Similar Figures/Figuras similares Definition: Two shapes/figures are Similar if the only difference is size (and possibly the need to turn or flip one around). Definición: En geometría, dos figuras son similares si la única diferencia es el tamaño (y a lo mejor girar o voltear una de ellas).

Reflection/Reflexión Definition: An image or shape as it would be seen in a mirror, or in a smooth lake. Definición: Una reflexión es un volteo con respecto a una línea.

Rotation/Rotación Definition: Turning around a center. The distance from the center to any point on the shape stays the same. Every point makes a circle around the center. Definición: Girar alrededor de un centro. La distancia del centro a cualquier punto de la figura es la misma. Cada punto sigue un círculo alrededor del centro.

Translation/Translación Definition: Moving without rotating, resizing or anything else, just moving. Every point of the shape must move in the same distance and in the same direction. Definición: Movimiento de una figura, sin rotarla ni voltearla. "Deslizar". La figura sigue viéndose exactamente igual, solo que en un lugar diferente.

Right angle/Ángulo recto Definition: An angle which is equal to 90°, one quarter of a full revolution. Definición: Un ángulo recto es un ángulo que mide exactamente 90°.

Acute Angle/Ángulo agudo Definition: An angle whose measure is less than 90°. Definición: Un ángulo de menos de 90°.

Obtuse angle/Ángulo obtuso Definition: An angle that is greater than 90° but less than 180°. Definición: Un ángulo que mide más de 90° pero menos de 180°.

Ray/RAyo Definition: A ray is a line that starts at a given point and goes off forever in some direction. Definición: Un rayo es una línea con punto de inicio pero sin punto final (va hacia el infinito).

Plane/Plano Definition: The plane has two dimensions: length and width. But since the plane is infinitely large, the length and width cannot be measured. Definición: Un plano es una superficie plana sin espesor que se extiende hacia el infinito.

Vertex/vértice Definition: A point where two or more straight lines meet. A corner. Definición: Un punto donde dos o más líneas se encuentran. Una esquina.

Polygon/Polígono Definition: Polygons are 2-dimensional shapes. They are made of straight lines, and the shape is "closed" (all the lines connect up). Definición: Una figura plana (bidimensional) con lados rectos. Ejemplos: triángulos, rectángulos y pentágonos.

Rectangle/Rectángulo Definition: A four-sided polygon (a flat shape with straight sides) where every angle is a right angle (90°). Opposite sides are parallel and of equal length. Definición: Un rectángulo es un polígono de 4 lados (una figura plana de lados rectos) en donde cada ángulo es un ángulo recto (90°). Los lados opuestos son paralelos y de igual longitud.

Pentagon/Pentágono Definition: A 5-sided polygon (a flat shape with straight sides). Definición: Un polígono de 5 lados (una figura plana de lados rectos).

Triangle/Triángulo Definition: A triangle is a figure that has three sides and three angles. The three angles always add to 180°. Definición: Un triángulo tiene tres lados y tres ángulos. Los tres ángulos siempre suman 180°.

Octagon/Octágono Definition: An 8-sided polygon (a flat shape with straight sides). Definición: Un polígono de 8 lados (una figura plana de lados rectos).

Three-dimensional figure/figuras tridimensionales Definition: Three-dimensional figures are those figures that do not lie in a plane. The dimensions of three-dimensional figures are length, width, and height. Definición: Las figuras tridimensionales se llaman sólidos. Los sólidos tienen tres dimensiones: longitud, profundidad y altura.        

Cube/Cubo Definition: A cube is a box-shaped solid object that has six identical square faces. Definición: Un cubo es un objeto sólido en forma de caja que tiene seis caras cuadradas idénticas.

Cone/Cono Definition: A solid (3-dimensional) object that has a circular base and one vertex. Definición: Un objeto sólido (tri-dimensional) que tiene una base circular y un solo un vértice.

Sphere/ESfera Definition: A 3-dimensional object shaped like a ball. Every point on the surface is the same distance from the center. Definición: Un objeto tridimensional con la forma de una pelota. Todos los puntos de su superficie están a la misma distancia del centro.

Quadrilaterals/cuadriláteros Definition: Any four-sided shape is a quadrilateral but the sides have to be straight, and it has to be 2-dimensional. Definición: Las figuras de cuatro lados se llaman cuadriláteros pero los lados tienen que ser rectos, y la figura tiene que ser bidimensional.
