Reflections on John 15:9 - 17 Reflexiones en Juan 15:9 - 17 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. May 13, 2012 Jesus told us that the Holy Spirit would teach us all that we needed to know, in due time. Today the Church teaches us how every privilege comes with responsibility. The first reading is about how the Holy Spirit descends over those that fear him and act uprightly (justly), regardless of their nation.

Jesús nos dijo que el Espirito Santo nos enseñaría todo lo que necesitamos saber, a su debido tiempo. Hoy la Iglesia nos enseña como todo privilegio viene con su responsabilidad. La primera lectura es de cómo el Espirito Santo desciende sobre la gente que le teme y practica la justicia, sea de la nación que fuera.

The second reading reveals to us that God loved us and sent his Son as expiation (reparation or penance) for our sins. The gospel speaks about how being chosen brings with it the responsibility of bearing enduring fruit.

La segunda lectura nos dice que Dios nos amo primero y nos envió a su Hijo, como victima de expiación (reparación o penitencia) por nuestros pecados. El evangelio nos habla de como ser escogido trae con ello una responsabilidad de tener fruto perdurable.

St. Augustine (Tractates on the Gospel of John 86 St. Augustine (Tractates on the Gospel of John 86.2) has some beautiful things to say about being chosen. “What were we before Christ had chosen us besides being wicked and lost? We did not believe in him, so as to be chosen by him… You cannot say, I am chosen because I believed. Nor can you say, before I believed I did good works and therefore was chosen.”

San Agustín (Tractado Acerca el Evangelio de Juan 86 San Agustín (Tractado Acerca el Evangelio de Juan 86.2) tiene algunas observaciones bellas acerca de eso de ser escogidos. “¿Qué éramos antes de que Cristo nos escogiera aparte de ser malvados y perdidos? No creíamos en Él, para ser escogidos por Él... No puedes decir, soy escogido porque yo creí. Ni puedes decir, antes que yo creí yo hice buenas obras y por eso fui escogido.”

“Amazing grace is that we were wicked and were chosen, so that by the grace of God we might become good.” Romans 5:8 says: “God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.”

“Maravillosa es la gracia de Dios, que cuando todavía éramos malvados fuimos escogidos, para que por la gracia de Dios nos hiciéramos buenos.” Romanos 5:8 dice: “Dios nos mostró su amor, que mientras que todavía éramos pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros.”

Once we know the Lord chooses us it is not worthy of the Lord to hold back, and to hesitate, and to refuse. Rather, it seems that it is only good and just to be grateful, and to make decisions in response to God who calls us out of love. How could we possibly say no? I can see the Lord saying to his disciples “Will you also turn away?” (John 6:67).

Una vez que nos damos cuenta que somos escogidos por el Señor, no es digno del Señor hacernos atrás, rehusando, rechazando a Cristo. Al contrario, me parece bien y justo ser agradecido, y hacer decisiones en respuesta a Dios que nos llama por amor. ¿Cómo sería posible decir que no? Jesús una vez dijo a sus discípulos: “¿También ustedes se van? (Juan 6:67).

Our Lady did not turn away Our Lady did not turn away. When she knew she was chosen to be the Mother of Jesus, she said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). St. Ignatius Loyola suggests that we pray often that we not be deaf to his call, but prompt and diligent to accomplish his holy will (Spiritual Exercises # 91).

Not only that, but “those who wish to give greater proof of their love, and to distinguish themselves in whatever concerns the service of the eternal King and the Lord of all, will not only offer themselves entirely for the work, but will act against their sensuality and carnal and worldly love,” and offer themselves by making a deliberate choice. The choice is ours to make, let us seize the opportunity! What a privilege! What joy!

Además, dice San Ignacio, “los que se quieran distinguir en todo servicio del Rey Eterno y Señor de todo, no solamente ofrecerán sus personas al trabajo, sino que también actuarán contra su propia sensualidad y contra su amor carnal y mundano” (Ejercicios Espirituales #97). Se ofrecerán a si mismo escogiendo deliberadamente. Esa decisión de escoger es nuestra para hacer. ¡Vamos a tomar la oportunidad! ¡Qué privilegio! ¡Qué gozo!

This is a call for discipline. This is a call for action This is a call for discipline. This is a call for action. This calls for motion, movement. It is not enough to just sit there, and let others do it. I want to get involved. I want to serve the Lord and I will it. No ifs, buts, or maybes. No half-measures will do. How sad it is when we say no to the Lord. The rich young man in the Gospel who would not respond to Jesus because he had many possessions went away sad (Matthew 19:22).

Yo quiero participar . Yo quiero servir al Señor. Lo deseo. No hay lugar para andar con “quizás que sí, quizás que no.” Basta con tantas excusas, y con tantos “peros”. Eso de estar medio entregado no complace al Señor. Que triste es cuando le decimos “no” al Señor. El joven rico en el evangelio (Mateo 19:22) no quiso seguir a Jesús porque tenia muchas posesiones. Se fue triste, cara colgada.

Jesus said: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” Wow! St. Ignatius said once that there is no greater joy than that which comes from following the Lord Jesus Christ! I believe it. Do you? Do you want to say “My cup overflows” (Psalm 23:5), like King David? All you have to do is remain in his love by keeping his commandments.

Jesús dice: “Estas cosas te he hablado, para que mi gozo este en ti, y que tu gozo este completo.” ¡Que maravilla! San Ignacio dijo una vez: “¡No hay gozo más grande que lo que viene de seguir al Señor Cristo Jesús!” Yo lo creo. ¿Y tu? ¿Quieres decir “Mi copa esta rebosando” (Salmo 23:50) como dijo el Rey David? Todo lo que hay que hacer es permanecer en su amor cumpliendo los mandamientos.

The word of the Lord speaks about the one who chooses to follow the Lord. It says: “Who will ascend the mountain of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false, and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord” (Psalm 24:3-5). He does it because of love, the love of the Lord in his heart.

La palabra de Dios habla del que escoge a seguir al Señor La palabra de Dios habla del que escoge a seguir al Señor. Dice: “¿Quién subirá el monte del Señor? Y, ¿Quién estará en su lugar Santo? El limpio de manos y puro de corazón; El que no ha elevado su alma a cosas vanas, ni jurado con engaños. Él recibirá la bendición de Dios” (Salmo 24:3-5). Todo esto lo hace por el amor de Dios.

“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). Do that, and you shall live! “No hay amor más grande que éste: dar la vida por sus amigos” (Juan 15:13). Haz esto, y ¡vivirás!
