Hechos de los Apóstoles 22:3 – 16 3 En aquellos días, Pablo dijo al pueblo: “Yo soy judío, nací en Tarso de Cilicia, pero me crié aquí, en Jerusalén; fui alumno de Gamaliel y aprendí a observar en todo su rigor la ley de nuestros padres y estaba tan lleno de celo por las cosas de Dios, como lo están ustedes ahora. 4 Perseguí a muerte el camino cristiano, encadenando y metiendo en la cárcel a hombres y mujeres,

5 como pueden atestiguarlo el sumo sacerdote y todo el consejo de los ancianos. Ellos me dieron cartas para los hermanos de Damasco y me dirigí hacia allá en busca de creyentes para traerlos presos a Jerusalén y castigarlos. 6 Pero en el camino, cerca ya de Damasco, a eso del mediodía, de repente me envolvió una gran luz venida del cielo; 7 caí por tierra y oí una voz que me decía: ‘Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues?’

8 Yo le respondí: ‘Señor, ¿quién eres tú?’ Él me contestó: ‘Yo soy Jesús de Nazaret, a quien tú persigues’. 9 Los que me acompañaban vieron la luz, pero no oyeron la voz del que me hablaba. 10 Entonces yo le dije: ‘¿Qué debo hacer, Señor?’ El Señor me respondió: ‘Levántate y vete a Damasco; allá te dirán todo lo que tienes que hacer’.

11 Como yo no podía ver, cegado por el resplandor de aquella luz, mis compañeros me llevaron de la mano hasta Damasco. 12 Allí, un hombre llamado Ananías, varón piadoso y observante de la ley, muy respetado por todos los judíos que vivían en Damasco, 13 fue a verme, se me acercó y me dijo: ‘Saulo, hermano, recobra la vista’. Inmediatamente recobré la vista y pude verlo.

14 Él me dijo: ‘El Dios de nuestros padres te ha elegido para que conocieras su voluntad, vieras al Justo y escucharas sus palabras, 15 porque deberás atestiguar ante todos los hombres lo que has visto y oído. 16 Y ahora, ¿qué esperas? Levántate, recibe el bautismo, reconoce que Jesús es el Señor y queda limpio de tus pecados’ ”.

Acts of the Apostles 22:3 – 16 3 Paul addressed the people in these words: “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city. At the feet of Gamaliel I was educated strictly in our ancestral law and was zealous for God, just as all of you are today. 4 I persecuted this Way to death, binding both men and women and delivering them to prison.

5 Even the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify on my behalf. For from them I even received letters to the brothers and set out for Damascus to bring back to Jerusalem in chains for punishment those there as well. 6 “On that journey as I drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

8 I replied, ‘Who are you, sir?’ And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are persecuting.’ 9 My companions saw the light but did not hear the voice of the one who spoke to me. 10 I asked, ‘What shall I do, sir?’ The Lord answered me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told about everything appointed for you to do.’

11 Since I could see nothing because of the brightness of that light, I was led by hand by my companions and entered Damascus. 12 “A certain Ananias, a devout observer of the law, and highly spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, 13 came to me and stood there and said, ‘Saul, my brother, regain your sight.’ And at that very moment I regained my sight and saw him.

14 Then he said, ‘The God of our ancestors designated you to know his will, to see the Righteous One, and to hear the sound of his voice; 15 for you will be his witness before all to what you have seen and heard. 16 Now, why delay? Get up and have yourself baptized and your sins washed away, calling upon his name.’ ”

Reflections on Acts 22: Reflexiones en Hechos 22: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Jan. 25, 2009 As we celebrate the Conversion of St. Paul, today we see how Jesus Christ rules the Church. He personally intervenes as light in the darkest hours of the early Church. This is a most important event for the whole world, then and now. The risen Lord transcends time and space as God. This is of great consolation to us.

Hoy celebramos la fiesta de la conversión de San Pablo. Vemos como Cristo resucitado manda a su Iglesia. Personalmente interviene como la luz en las horas más oscuras de la Iglesia primitiva. Esto es un acontecimiento de suma importancia para el mundo entero, hoy y entonces. El Señor resucitado transciende el tiempo y el espacio como Dios. Esto es de gran consolación para nosotros.

In Acts of the Apostles Saul introduces himself to Jerusalem. “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city. En los Hechos de los Apóstoles Saúl se introduce a Jerusalén. “Yo soy un Judío, nacido en Tarso de Cilicia, educado en esta Ciudad a los pies de Gamaliel, en el rigor de la Ley de nuestros antepasados como celador de Dios. Perseguí de muerte esta doctrina, encadenando a hombres y mujeres.” Obtuvo cartas autorizándolo ir a Damasco.

As he drew near to Damascus, at about noon, a great light from the sky suddenly shone. ‘I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ Saul asked: ‘Who are you, Lord?’ (Indicates he knew it had to do with the divine). He said to me: ‘I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are persecuting.’

Al acercarse a Damasco, como al mediodía, una gran luz del cielo repentinamente lo envolvió. “Caí al suelo y oí una voz que me decía: “Saúl, Saúl, ¿porqué me persigues?” Saúl pregunto: “¿Quién eres, Señor?” (En griego, este titulo ya tiene que ver con lo divino). Él me dijo: “Yo soy Jesús Nazareno, a quien tu persigues.”

Note the credentials of Jesus: First, He is a Nazorean. (It was a tiny, insignificant town where uneducated and poor Galileans lived. Often in derision people would ask: “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Those people were called the anawim. This means they were the “small-town insignificant poor people” with whom Jesus identifies. He was crucified as “Jesus of Nazareth”. Second, He is persecuted.

Noten los credenciales de Jesús. Primeramente, es Nazareno. Nazaret era un pueblito donde habitaban los Galileos, maleducados y pobres. Este tipo de gente se llamaba los anawim, (gente común y corriente). Hasta Natanael pregunto: “¿Puede algo bueno venir de Nazaret?” (Juan 1: 46) Lo importante es que Jesús se identificó con ellos. Fue crucificado como Jesús de Nazaret.

When Herod persecuted Jesus as a baby, St. Joseph was warned in a dream, and he withdrew to Egypt and later to Nazareth (Matthew 2:23). The prophecy was fulfilled: “He shall be called a Nazarene.” The anawim provided him a place of refuge. Our Lady spoke with anawim spirituality when she prayed the “Magnificat” (Luke 1).

Segundo, Jesús se identifico con los que Saúl perseguía. Recordemos que cuando Herodes perseguía a Jesús como niño, San José fue dirigido en un sueño que saliera de fuga a Egipto y despues a Nazaret. Fue con los anawim que Jesús encontró refugio. Nuestra Señora hablaba con la espiritualidad de los anawim cuando rezo el “Magnifica” (Lucas 1),

“God my Savior has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden.” The Lord has exalted those of low degree… he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty…” “Mi alma magnifica al Señor... Dios mi Salvador ha mirado la humildad de su sierva; el Señor ensalzo a los humildes... A los hambrientos los lleno de bienes, y a los ricos los despidió vacíos.”

In Matthew 11:25 Jesus declared: “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, such was your gracious will.” This shows that thanksgiving was characteristic of the prayer of Jesus.

En Mateo 11:25 Jesús proclama: “Te doy gracias, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque has escondido estas cosas de los sabios y entendidos, y se lo has revelado a los pequeños. Si, Padre, esto te complace.” Esto muestra que dar gracias es característico de la oración de Jesús.

From this the Church noted his preferential option for the poor. They are the persecuted, the uneducated, the voiceless, the orphans and the widows, the blind, the lepers, the tax collectors and prostitutes, sinners. They loved him, and followed him. They saw him as one of their own.

De aquí la Iglesia nota la opción preferencial de Jesús para los pobres. Son los perseguidos, los mal- educados, los que no tienen voz, las viudas y los huérfanos, los ciegos, los leprosos, los recaudadores de impuestos y las prostitutas, los pecadores. Ellos lo amaban, y lo seguían, porque lo veían como uno de ellos. Él sabe cuales son los suyos. (Juan 10:27).

Saul is blinded until he learns obedience by suffering. “He is told what he is to do.” (Acts 22:10). What a humiliation! He was led by the hand to old man Ananias. He is baptized and receives the name Paul. Once he proclaims Jesus as the Son of God, he is rejected, time and time again. Jesus himself directs him to leave Jerusalem, for he will not be accepted (Acts. 22:18). Eventually he goes to the Gentiles, glory to God!

Saúl es ciego hasta que aprende la obediencia por el sufrir. “Se le dice lo que hay que hacer” (Hechos 22:10). ¡Qué grande la humillación! Se le lleva por la mano a un viejito llamado Ananias. Es bautizado y recibe por nombre Pablo. Una vez que proclamo que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, es rechazado una y otra vez. Jesús mismo lo dirige a salir de Jerusalén, porque allí no será recibido (Hechos 22:18). Con el tiempo llega a los Gentiles, que somos nosotros, ¡Gloria a Dios!

In Philippians 3:7 St. Paul concludes: “Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ, and be found in him…”

En Filipenses 3:7 San Pablo concluye: “Lo que tenia por ganancia, lo reputo ahora por Cristo como perdida, a causa del sublime conocimiento de Cristo Jesús, mi Señor, por cuyo amor todo lo sacrifiqué y lo tengo por basura, con tal de ganar a Cristo, y ser hallado en Él...”
