To express doubt, uncertainty, influence, and subjectivity PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE (MOOD)

 The subjunctive is a MOOD in Spanish, not a TENSE.  Tenses:  Present, Preterit, Imperfect, Future…  Moods:  Indicative - what we use most! Expresses certainty, objectivity, facts, making requests  Imperative – Giving commands  Subjunctive – Expresses uncertainty, doubt, influence, subjectivity WHAT IS IT?

 There are TWO PARTS!  Phrase #1 uses the present indicative  QUE  CHANGE OF SUBJECT  Phrase #2 uses the present subjunctive Yo sugiero que tú hagas la tarea. PHRASE #1 + que + change of subject + PHRASE #2 HOW IS IT FORMED?

 The present subjunctive is formed by…  Putting the verb in the “yo” form  Taking off the “-o”  Adding the *OPPOSITE ENDING HOW IS IT FORMED? * -e-emos -es-éis -e-en * -a-amos -as-áis -a-an verbos -ar verbos -er / -ir

 The subjunctive uses the same spelling changes as negative tú commands and formal commands -gar  -gue -car  -que -zar  -ce SPELLING CHANGES

 Decir  Insistir en  Necesitar  Permitir  Preferir  Prohibir  Querer  Recomendar  Sugerir VERBS OFTEN FOLLOWED BY: QUE + CHANGE OF SUBJ + SUBJUNCTIVE
