Preterit Stem Changing Yasmin, Tenzin, Gaby

What is a preterit stem changing verb? It is a verb in the past tense that has stem changes. One letter changes to another in the usted and ustedes conjugation of a verb.

Example: Sentir Yo  Senti Tu  Sentiste El/ Ella/ Usted  Sintio Nosotros  Sentimos Ellos/ Ellas/ Ustedes  Sintieron

As you can see from the example, the ending of the verbs are the same as preterit tense. The only thing that changes is the e-i in the usted and ustedes form.

Yo  Dormi Tu  Dormiste El/ Ella/ Usted  Durmio Nosotros  Dormimos Ellos/ Ellas/ Ustedes  Durmieron It isn’t always e that changes to an i. In the verb dormir, the preterit conjugation is as follows:

Destruir Yo  Destrui Tu  Destruiste El/ Ella/ Usted  Destruyo Nosotros  Destruimos Ellos/ Ellas/ Ustedes  Destruyeron

The verbs that have preterit stem- changing are all –IR verbs, but not every –IR verb is stem-changing. For example, Escribir is not stem- changing.
