Lucas 1: En aquel tiempo, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea, llamada Nazaret, 27 a una virgen desposada con un varón de la estirpe de David, llamado José. La virgen se llamaba María. 28 Entró el ángel a donde ella estaba y le dijo: “Alégrate, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo”. 29 Al oír estas palabras, ella se preocupó mucho y se preguntaba qué querría decir semejante saludo.

30 El ángel le dijo: “No temas, María, porque has hallado gracia ante Dios. 31 Vas a concebir y a dar a luz un hijo y le pondrás por nombre Jesús. 32 Él será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo; el Señor Dios le dará el trono de David, su padre, 33 y él reinará sobre la casa de Jacob por los siglos y su reinado no tendrá fin”.

34 María le dijo entonces al ángel: “¿Cómo podrá ser esto, puesto que yo permanezco virgen?” 35 El ángel le contestó: “El Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre ti y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra. Por eso, el Santo, que va a nacer de ti, será llamado Hijo de Dios. 36 Ahí tienes a tu parienta Isabel que a pesar de su vejez, ha concebido un hijo y ya va en el sexto mes la que llamaban estéril,

37 porque no hay nada imposible para Dios”. 38 María contestó: “Yo soy la esclava del Señor; cúmplase en mí lo que me has dicho”. Y el ángel se retiró de su presencia. Palabra del Señor

Luke 1: The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.

30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33 and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

34 But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” 35 And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;

37 for nothing will be impossible for God.” 38 Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her. Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on Luke 1: Reflexiones en Lucas 1: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Dec. 21, 2014 Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. “Drop down dew from above, you heavens, and let the clouds rain down the Just One; let the earth be opened and bring forth a Savior” (Isaiah 45:8). As we celebrate the coming of the Lord like dewfall, we witness how he is present in our midst in our time. Let us reflect on the significance of the readings for the Mass today.

Hoy es el Cuarto Domingo de Adviento. “Destilen, cielos, el rocío, y que las nubes lluevan al justo; que la tierra se abra y haga germinar al salvador” (Isaías 45:8). Al celebrar la venida del Señor como un rocío del cielo, somos testigos de cómo Él esta presente en medio de nosotros en nuestro tiempo. Vamos a hacer una reflexión acerca del significado de las lecturas de la Misa de hoy.

In the first reading of today’s Mass from the Second Book of Samuel, God promised King David, and the people of God, that he was going to send an heir after him, and would make his kingdom firm. God would be a father to him, and he would be a son to him. His house, and his kingdom would endure forever; his throne would stand firm forever. The people of God held on to this promise for centuries, waiting for its fulfillment.

En la primera lectura de la Misa de hoy, en el Segundo Libro de Samuel, Dios prometió al Rey David, y al Pueblo de Dios, que Él iba a mandar un heredero después de él, y que iba a consolidar su reino. Dios seria un Padre para él, y él seria un hijo para Él. Su casa, y su reino iban a perdurar para siempre; su trono seria estable para siempre. La gente de Dios se aferraba a esta promesa por muchos siglos, esperando que se cumpliera.

Psalm 89 was sung, to remind the People of God that God is faithful and fulfils his promises. “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant: forever will I confirm your posterity, and establish your throne forever. El Salmo 88 se cantaba, para recordar al Pueblo de Dios que Dios es fiel y que cumple sus promesas. “Yo he hecho una alianza con mi escogido; Yo he jurado a David mi siervo: por siempre confirmare tus descendientes, y estableceré tu trono para siempre.

St. Paul reminds us (Romans 16:25-27) that God’s secret, which he kept for long ages, is now manifested as fulfilled through prophetic writings. It was finally made known to all nations, when Jesus came into the world. It was a revelation God made first to the Virgin Mary, and she kept it a secret for the Child’s protection, until due time. The secret was made known through Jesus in due time, during his Public life, to the Apostles, and to St. Paul, and now to all the nations.

San Pablo nos recuerda (Romanos 16:25-27), que el secreto de Dios hacia como se cumpliría, que se había aguardado por siglos, ahora es manifestado por las escrituras proféticas. Finalmente se manifestó a todas las naciones, cuando Jesús vino al mundo. Era una revelación que Dos hizo primero a la Virgen Maria, y ella lo guardo como secreto en su corazón para la protección del Niño, hasta el tiempo apropiado. El secreto fue revelado por Jesús a su debido tiempo, durante su Vida Publica, a los Apóstoles, a San Pablo, y ahora a todas las naciones.

In the Gospel, the Angel Gabriel is sent by God to a small town in Galilee, called Nazareth. He gently announces (like silent dew falling from heaven), to the Virgin Mary, that she has been chosen to be the Mother of God. She was betrothed to Joseph, of the house of David. This was a fulfillment of the promise God made to David. Her simple life was forever transformed.

En el Evangelio, el Ángel Gabriel es mandado por Dios a un pueblo en Galilea, llamado Nazaret. Él anuncia gentilmente (como el rocío bajando del cielo), a la Virgen Maria, que ella había sido escogida a ser la Madre de Dios. Ella estaba empadronada a José, de la casa de David. Esto fue un cumplimiento de la promesa que Dios le hizo a David. Su vida fue transformada para siempre.

The Lord acts in profound silence. It was a big secret. No one knew except the Virgin Mary. She never sought the limelight. Mary is portrayed as a woman of quiet charm and profound holiness. Her humble obedience is awesome! The implications of her saying “yes” to God have changed the whole world.

El Señor actúa en silencio profundo. Era un gran secreto. Nadie sabia excepto la Virgen Maria. Ella nunca busco publicidad. Maria es presentada como una mujer de encanto quieto, y de santidad profunda. ¡Su obediencia humilde es maravillosa! Las implicaciones de su decir “Si” han cambiado al mundo entero.

When the Angel said: “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you,” Our Lady was greatly troubled at what was said, and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The Angel gently reassured her. “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Then the big secret is announced: “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.

Cuando el Ángel dice: “¡Ave, llena de gracia! El Señor esta contigo”, Nuestra Señora se preocupa mucho, y se preguntaba que querría decir semejante saludo. El Ángel gentilmente le asegura: “No temas, Maria, porque has encontrado favor con Dios”. Entonces se le anuncia el gran secreto: “He aquí, que vas a concebir y a dar a luz un hijo y le pondrás por nombre Jesús.

He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Él será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo: el Señor Dos le dará el trono de David, su padre, y él reinara sobre la casa de Jacob por los siglos y su reinado no tendrá fin”.

Our Lady did ask how this was to be, since she had no relations with a man. The Angel clarified this in his reply: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. Furthermore, a sign was given to her. Her cousin Elizabeth who was called sterile, had also conceived a son (John the Baptist) in her old age, and she was in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible for God. That was all Our Lady needed to know. Her response was: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Nuestra Señora le pregunto como iba a suceder esto, siendo que ella no-tenia relación con un hombre. El Ángel replico: “El Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre ti, y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra. Por eso, el Santo, que va a nacer de ti, será llamado Hijo de Dios. Ahí tienes a tu parienta Isabel, que a pesar de su vejez, ha concebido un hijo (Juan Bautista) y ya va en el sexto mes la que llamaban estéril, porque no hay nada imposible para Dios”. Esto es todo lo que Nuestra Señora quería saber. Su responso fue: “He aquí la esclava del Señor, que se cumpla en mi lo que me has dicho.”

Note her total surrender: it’s not what she wants but what God wills. She anticipated what Jesus her own son would one day declare: “I did not come of my own will” (John 8:42). And in the Our Father Jesus taught us to say “Thy will be done” (Matthew 6:10). His last prayer at the Garden of Olives was: “Not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22: 44). This was complete obedience to the Father. And it is in doing God’s will that we find our peace.

Noten su entrega total: no es lo que ella quiere sino lo que Dios quiere. Ella anticipa lo que Jesús su hijo algún día iba a declarar: “Yo no vine de mi propia voluntad” (Juan 8:42). Y en el Padre Nuestro Jesús nos enseño a decir: “Hágase tu voluntad” (Mateo 6:10). Su ultima oración en el Huerto de los Olivos fue: “No mi voluntad, sino la tuya, sea cumplida” (Lucas 22:44). Esto fue obediencia completa al Padre. Y es en el cumplir la voluntad de Dios que encontramos nuestra paz.

Our Blessed Mother is constantly bearing spiritual children by bringing them to her Son, Jesus. She is the model for us to follow. She acted in faith. We need to do likewise. Even if she had known all she was to suffer as the Mother of Jesus, she would have responded with the same “Yes”. “Be it done unto me, according to your word”. Our beautiful Mother continues to be there for us at all time, doing all that mothers do for their children.

Nuestra Bendita Madre constantemente esta procreando hijos espirituales, trayéndolos a su Hijo, Jesús. Ella es el modelo que hemos de seguir. Ella actuó en fe. Hay que hacer lo mismo. Aunque hubiera sabido cuanto iba a sufrir como Madre de Jesús, ella hubiera respondido con el mismo “Sí.” “Hágase en mi según tu palabra”. Nuestra bellísima Madre continua a estar allí por nosotros todo el tiempo, haciendo lo que una madre hace por sus hijos.

We just celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It is there that Our Lady said she wanted to show all her love, compassion, help and protection for us who love her. Those who trust in her and invoke her help will find she is always ready to hear our laments and remedy our pains. In the Holy Rosary we sing her praises, and are held in her arms, knowing She is our Mother.

Acabamos de celebrar la Fiesta de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Allí es donde Nuestra Señora dice que quiere mostrar todo su amor, compasión, ayuda, y protección para nosotros los que la amamos. Los que confían en ella y invocan su ayuda encontraran que ella siempre esta lista para oír sus lamentos, y remediar sus dolores. En el Santo Rosario, cantamos sus alabanzas, y ella nos tiene en su regazo, y nos damos cuenta que es nuestra Madre.

We join the Angel Gabriel, and repeat his holy words: “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.” And we join her cousin Elizabeth, who first called her “Mother of my Lord” (Luke 1:43). John the Baptist leaped in her womb for joy. Our hearts leap for joy likewise. And we join Elizabeth, who said: ”Blessed are you among woman”. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen!

Nos unimos al Ángel Gabriel, al repetir sus santas palabras: “Ave Maria, llena de gracia, el Señor esta contigo”. Y nos unimos a su prima Isabel, la que fue la primera para llamarla “Madre de mi Señor” (Lucas 1:43). Juan el Bautista salto de gozo en su seno. Igualmente, nuestros corazones saltan de gozo. Y nos unimos a Isabel, que dice: “Bendita tú eres entre todas las mujeres”. Santa Maria, Madre de Dios, ruega por nosotros, ahora y en la hora de nuestra muerte. ¡Amen!
