Indirect Objects and Indirect object pronouns

What is an Indirect object? The indirect object answers the question "To whom?" or "For whom?" the action of the verb is performed.

Por Ejemplo… Juan gives the book to María. Juan (who is doing the action) – subject Gives (what is Juan doing?) - verb Book (what does he give?)- Direct object María (to whom does he give the book?) – Indirect object

Sentences that have an indirect object usually also have a direct object. Remember, the indirect object tells us where the direct object is going.

What is an Indirect Object Pronoun? The Indirect Object Pronoun is the pronoun that substitutes for the indirect object.

In English English – John throws the ball to Enrique. John throws the ball to him. Him is the indirect object pronoun substituting the indirect object.

The following are the indirect object pronouns Me – to me/for me nos – to us/for us Te – to you/for youos – to yall/for yall Le – to him/for himles – to you/for you to her/for her to them/for them to you/for you

Please note that the indirect objects can only be people – never things

Where do indirect object pronouns go? Just like the direct object pronouns, the indirect object pronouns go before the conjugated verb. Juan tiró la pelota a Enrique. Juan le tiró la pelota.

Vamos a practicar….substitute the indirect object pronoun (iop) for the indirect object. Mi esposo hizo café para mí. Yo compré las flores para mi mamá. Yo di los libros a los estudiantes.

Las Respuestas Mi esposo me hizo café. Yo le compré las flores (para mi mamá). Yo les di los libros (a los estudiantes).

Since le and les can mean more than one thing, a prepositional phrase is often added to remove the ambiguity. Yo le compré las flores (para mi mamá). Yo les di los libros (a los estudiantes).

In addition…. Adding the prepositional phrase can also emphasize the indirect object.

What happens if you have both a direct object pronoun and an indirect object pronoun in the same sentence??????

Listen carefully It must go in this order…. –Subject –Indirect object pronoun –Direct object pronoun –Verb

Por ejemplo… I made cookies for you. I made you them. Yo hizo galletas para ti. Yo te las hizo.

But…. If the direct object pronoun and the indirect object pronoun both begin with the letter L, then the indirect object pronoun changes to SE. Otherwise it is hard to say….

¡Ten Cuidado! I made salad for them. Yo hizo la ensalada para ellos. Yo les la hizo. Yo se la hizo.

QUIZ…. Mi hermana limpia la casa para mí. Mi hermana _____ limpia la casa. Yo enviaré una carta a ti. Yo ______ enviaré una carta. Ellos hicieron las reservaciones para nosotros. Ellos _____ hicieron las reservaciones.

QUIZ…cont. Yo compro la comida para mi familia. Yo _____ compro la comida (para mi familia). El director dijo la verdad a sus empleados. El director ______ dijo la verdad (a sus empleados).

Preguntas Más Avanzadas…. 1)Translate the following 2)Then substitute the do with the dop 3)Then substitute the io with the iop 4)Then substitute both.

1) María gave the book to me. 2) She bought flowers for you. 3) Juan gave the money to us. 4) We wrote a letter to my sister. 5) My mother made cookies for them.

María gave the book to me. María dio el libro a mí. María lo dio a mí. María me dio el libro. María me lo dio.

She bought flowers for you. Ella compró las flores para ti. Ella las compró para ti. Ella te compró las flores. Ella te las compró.

Juan gave the money to us. Juan dio el dinero a nosotros. Juan lo dio a nosotros. Juan nos dio el dinero. Juan nos lo dio.

We wrote a letter to my sister Nosotros escribimos una carta a mi hermana. Nosotros la escribimos a mi hermana. Nosotros le escribimos una carta. Nosotros le la escribimos. = Nosotros se la escribimos.

My mother made cookies for them. Mi madre hizo galletas para ellos. Mi madre las hizo para ellos. Mi madre les hizo galletas Mi madre les las hizo. = Mi madre se las hizo.
