Let’s learn the verb “to be” in Spanish Let’s learn the verb “to be” in Spanish. The Spanish language uses more then one verb to define all the concepts of the verb to be. The two most important are the verbs: Ser and Estar. She is a girl She is here. Ella es una niña. Ella está aquí. In these phrases “es” and “está” are two different Spanish verbs They mean two different thing, one is a “permanent” intrinsic condition of being (Ella es una niña. / she is a girl). The other is a temporary location (Ella está aquí. / she is here). In both phrases the word “is” represents the verb to be. However, they mean two different things, one is a “permanent” intrinsic condition of being (she is a girl). The other is a temporally location (she is here).

The Verb “To Be” equals the Spanish verbs “Estar, Ser” and sometimes “Tener”. Estar = To Be. It is used for: emotions, locations, or states of being. Estoy triste / I am sad. Estoy aquí / I am here. Estoy atrasado / I am late. Ser = To Be. It is used for everything else meaning “to be” , such as: intrinsic traits, like physical traits, character traits, personality traits, nationality, identity, and also for things like time, dates, seasons, events, etc. Soy mujer / I am a woman. Yo soy extrovertido / I am extroverted. Soy americano / I am American. Soy estudiante / I am a student. Son las dos / it is two o’clock. Hoy es el 10 de enero / today is the 10 of January. Es invierno / it is winter. La clase es a las cuatro / the class is at four o’clock.

Ex. I am hungry / Tengo hambre I am in pain / Tengo dolor When you have a condition and you use the verb to be, the Spanish language uses the verb Tener which means to have. Ex. I am hungry / Tengo hambre I am in pain / Tengo dolor I am twelve years old / Tengo dose años Remember. In Spanish, “tener” is a possessive verb, so it is always means “to have”. Ex. Yo tengo dos perros / I have two dogs.
