The Preterite - Talking About the Past The Simple Past Tense –ar Verbs

The Preterite Tense The Preterite Tense is used to show actions that have happened in the past. Example: Josh attended Mr. Petula’s class. Example: Dawn gave Katie a picture for her birthday.

The Endings As in English, an ending is added to the verb to form the past or preterite tense. In English you would say that Josh attended, Dawn gave…(irreg.) In Spanish there are 6 different types of endings to express the preterite tense. We are going to learn those which apply to –ar verbs today.

1) -ar Verbs Endings for -ar Verbs -é -amos -aste -asteis -ó -aron These endings are added to most -ar verbs.

lavar – to wash lavé lavaste lavó lavamos lavasteis lavaron * Accents Yo ________ la ropa. Yo lavé la ropa.

The –car, -gar, -zar verbs Irregulars of -ar Verbs -ar verbs ending in –car, -gar, -zar have an irregularity It affects the first person singular only. Reason: In Spanish the letter c and g are soft in front of an e. A hard pronunciation is needed. Also, the letter z does not exist in front of an e in Spanish.

therefore….The irregularity in the “Yo form is: For –car verbs the ending would be -qué. Example: tocar – toqué (not tocé) For –gar verbs the ending would be -gué. Example: jugar – jugué (not jugé) For –zar verbs the ending would be -cé. Example: empezar-empecé (not empezé)

tocar – to play toqué tocaste tocó tocamos tocasteis tocaron Yo __________ la guitarra y Juan la __________ también. Yo toqué la guitarra y Juan la tocó también.

sacar – to get, take out(garbage) saqué sacaste sacó sacamos sacasteis sacaron Yo ________ la basura porque tú no la _______. Yo saqué la basura porque tú no la sacaste.

buscar – to look for busqué buscaste buscó buscamos buscasteis buscaron Mis amigos ________ el libro y yo ________ el libro también. Mis amigos buscaron el libro y yo busqué el libro también.
