1. Descriptions: SER Ser is used to describe inherent characteristics. Inherent = the essence of someone/something, part of who someone is/what something is, not easily changed Remember: ¿Cómo es? = What is he/she like? Personality traits “a/an ______ person” Ex: Él es terco. La silla es de plástico. Ella es inteligente. El salón es grande.

1. Descriptions: ESTAR Estar is used to describe conditions. Ex: healthy or sick Ex: warm/hot or cold An emotion or state due to current situation or only at that time Ex: sad because you got a bad grade Ex: tired because you didn’t sleep Ex: Él está enfermo. El agua está fría. Ella está cansada.

1. Descriptions WARNING: Thinking of permanent vs. temporary is not a good strategy. There are way too many exceptions. Choosing SER or ESTAR can change the meaning slightly. Él es alegre. = He’s a happy person. It’s part of his personality. (characteristic) Él está alegre. = Something happened to cause him to be happy at that moment. Implies he’s not usually this happy. (condition)

2. Place: SER Ser is used to describe where something came from or where a person is from. Also known as origin. Ex: ¿De dónde eres? Yo soy de Virginia. Él es cubano. La fruta es de Panamá.

2. Place: ESTAR Estar is used to describe where something/ someone is. (location) Ex: Los alumnos están en la escuela. ¿Dónde estás? Even when the location is permanent! Ex: Miami está en la Florida. La escuela está en Boynton Beach.
