In English the direct object of a sentence is the person or thing the action is being done to. Ejemplo: I returned the book In this sentence “book” is the direct object. You could easily replace book with the word “it” and it would still make sense. A good hint for finding the D.O. is that it is usually right after the verb. In English the direct object pronouns are him and her to replace names of people in order to avoid repetition and it for things. Also them to replace groups of people. Los objetos directos

In Spanish you have direct object pronouns as well. Instead of him, her, and it, you have “lo”, “la”, “los”, and “las”. Just like everything else in Spanish the direct object pronouns must agree in NUMBER and in GENDER with the noun they are replacing. Ejemplo: ¿Devolviste los libros a la biblioteca? No, no los devolví Los objetos directos

Los objectos directos “Lo” replaces: el, un, and él “La” replaces: la, una, and ella “Los” replaces: los, unos, and ellos “Las” replaces: las, unas, and ellas Los objectos directos

Los objetos directos Placement of direct object pronouns in Spanish They can go before a CONJUGATED verb. Devolví el libro  Lo devolví They can be attached to the end of an INFINITIVE verb. No puedo sacar el libro  No puedo sacarlo Los objetos directos

In the preterite(past tense) the forms of “ser” are the same as the forms of “ir”. The context of the sentence is what is going to help you determine which one they are using. Pretérito Irregular

Pretérito de IR Ir- to go Yo fui Nosotros fuimos Tú fuiste X Él Ellos Ella fue Ellas fueron Ud. Uds. Pretérito de IR

Pretérito de SER Ser- to be Yo fui Nosotros fuimos Tú fuiste X Él Ellos Ella fue Ellas fueron Ud. Uds. Notice that neither SER nor IR have accents on any forms in the preterite. Pretérito de SER

1) El cantante fue a Miami para vacaciones 1) El cantante fue a Miami para vacaciones. Ella fue una estudiante en la universidad de Georgia. 2) Yo fui a la escuela ayer. Yo fui de Carolina del Sur. 3) Nosotros fuimos al partido de fútbol americano. Nosotros fuimos cantantes en el coro. Ejemplos de SER y IR
