Both Verbs Mean “To Be”… …but, they have different uses, in different contexts.

II. Usos: SER Ejemplos: La mujer es profesora. 1. To identify profession and family members. Ejemplos: La mujer es profesora. Juan y Luis son mis primos. 2. To express possession with de. Ejemplo: El lápiz es de Sara.

…SER To express origin or material with “de.” Ejemplos: Yo soy de Cuba. El escritorio es de madera. To express time and day. Ejemplos: Son las nueve. Hoy es martes.

…SER 5. To describe “long-lasting” characteristics. (nationality, physical, personality, colors) Ejemplos: Yo soy calvo. Juana es vanidosa.

III. Usos: ESTAR To express location. Ejemplo: Miami está en Florida. To express conditions. (Temporary- health, emotions etc.) Ejemplos: La deportista está alegre. Los chicos están enfermos.

…Using Both with Adjectives SER and ESTAR can be used with the same adjectives, but have different meanings. Paco es enojado. (He is an angry person, characteristically) 2. Paco está enojado. (He is angry right now, today, but this will soon change)
