PST RESOURCE OVERVIEW NAME of the resource / tool Lancaster Community Profile   WHAT is the purpose of the resource / tool? This profile served as a reference to remind the group of the different type of diversity that needed to be represented in their group or Community Partnership. WHO developed the resource / tool? (If it was adapted from an existing document, please include a citation for the original source.) A First 5 LA consultant, Harder & Co., developed the profile for Best Start Lancaster. The demographic information in the profile comes from all the census tracks within the boundaries of this Best Start community. In other words, a more general profile of Lancaster won’t accurately reflect the diversity within this Best Start zone. HOW should the resource / tool be used? What circumstances are ideal/appropriate? By whom and when? Is a particular skill set or special preparation needed? The leaders would receive this document as part of their orientation. They would review the information and then think on whether the current composition of the leadership and broader Community Partnership was reflective of the profile. In addition, the Community Partnership would review the ethnic/racial information before every election, to increase awareness on whether we needed higher or lower representation from different groups. The guide is shared with leaders and community members. No particular skillset is needed but the information needs to be updated, at least after each census happens. WHY is this resource being recommended? (What makes is especially effective or useful for community-based work?) Best Start is grounded on the principle of having diverse stakeholders that at the same time represent the families or organizations that serve the families within designated boundaries. This tool serves as a barometer to assess every so often (six months, annually) if the leadership and community partnership are diverse enough. Implications: This can help redirect outreach efforts, to prioritize resources in areas where that could attract members from underrepresented groups. It can also influence election decisions, when members are voting for new leaders. (Although the latter proved difficult as members usually voted based on who they knew and trusted).
