Irregular preterite verbs Verbs with irregular roots

Other irregular verbs: There is another kind of irregular verb in the preterite. These have irregular roots you will need to memorize and all use the same set of irregular endings.

Endings these use: -e -imos -iste -isteis -o -ieron

Irregular roots: Andar (to walk)  anduv- Estar (to be)  estuv- Tener (to receive/get)  tuv- Haber (to have…(like to have done something))  hub- Poder (to succeed)  pud- Poner (to put/place)  pus- Saber (to find out)  sup- Querer (to try)  quis- Venir (to come)  vin-

Ellos pusieron el traje en la mesa. Ejemplos: Ellos pusieron el traje en la mesa. They put the suit on the table.

Change in meaning: Some verbs have different meanings in the preterite and imperfect. You don’t need to worry about that for now beyond knowing the ones on this sheet. We’ll discuss them in more detail when we get to the imperfect.
